At 17 years old, Bree Cronin – who turns 23 this summer – was all set for a career in the army. Already enrolled in military college, she was looking forward to juggling army life and competing in the sport of discus.
That all changed in an instant when she was struck by a car outside Cardiff central train station. Left with a brain injury, fractured arm, and multiple leg fractures. Her world was turned upside down. In place of the military future she had been working towards, she then faced a long and uncertain road to recovery.
Having always loved being a discus thrower, excelling as a Welsh Champion and medalling at the British Championships at the age of 15 in her age group, she made the decision in 2024 to return to the sport – but this time, in para athletics.
In her first twelve months, she finished fifth at the 2025 World Championships in Delhi.
And she is now ready to make her Commonwealth Games debut. And she will do so alongside training partner and Welsh teammate, Funmi Oduwaiye.
Bree is not the only sporting star of the family – her uncle Denys boxed professionally, even getting in the ring with Chris Eubank in 1990. Her brother Brook boxes and her cousins are weightlifters.
