Golden girl Olivia Breen is gearing up for her fourth Commonwealth Games and is aiming to add to her tally of two gold medals and a bronze.
In Birmingham four years ago, as captain of Wales’ athletics contingent, she stormed to gold in the 100m. And back in 2018 at the Gold Coast Games, she took gold in the long jump and bronze in the 100m.
On hearing the news that Glasgow would play host this summer, Breen admits she squealed with delight. Glasgow is where Olivia’s Commonwealth Games journey first began 12 years ago:
“Competing in a Welsh vest has been the biggest honour of my life at the last three Commonwealth Games. To have another opportunity to do the same would mean the world to me.”
Olivia is one of Wales’ most successful athletes having notched up an impressive collection of medals from across Paralympic Games, World Championships and European Championships.
At the Paris Paralympic Games, she was just edged out of taking her second consecutive bronze in the long jump, after medalling in Tokyo 2021. Columbia’s Karen Palomeque Moreno jumped 4.99m, the same distance as Olivia but was awarded the medal on the countback rule.
Olivia – who is always cheered on by her faithful ‘Team Breen’ – was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was two years old. Ever since she learned to walk, she has always loved running. In fact, her earliest athletics memory is winning her race on school sports day, aged five.
She loves fashion and shopping and she is also a broadcaster, having presented BBC Radio Wales’ Olivia Breen's Paris Diaries podcast.
