Welsh Athletics Virtual Road Relay Challenge

This round is open to all Welsh Athletics registered runners aged 15+ and is across a 5-mile race distance and an entry link will be available in January.  A time trial element is also included for U11, U13 & U15 athletes. Mixed teams of eight (4 x men / 4 x women) are required to complete legs of five miles per runner. Clubs can have an uncapped number of their runners competing with their overall result calculated by the times of their fastest four men and four women. (NB. Any single gender clubs wanting to enter can pair with other clubs to form a mixed team.  Contact competitions@welshathletics.org to set up a mixed team).

The overall winner of this round will gain the change to compete virtually against the other Home Countries in the international round to take place between 19th & 22nd March.

Summary of key competition rules:

  • All athletes must be registered with their club and Welsh Athletics to be eligible to compete
  • The relay element of this virtual event is open to athletes ages 15 & over.  A time trial element is incorporated for athletes ages under 15 in their various age groups.
  • Relay teams are made up of 8 individuals - 4 men & 4 women.  The fastest 4 men and women from each club will count towards the scoring team (multiple teams may be scored per club).
  • Relay race distance - 5 miles
  • Time Trial distances :
  • U11 - 1 mile
  • U13 - 2K
  • U15 - 3K
  • Performances must be submitted via OpenTrack following the rules below.
  • Athletes must make their runs PUBLIC on either Strava or Garmin to allow for result scrutiny. 
  • Performances that do not comply with the parameters set out below will be marked as non-scoring in the final results and will not be eligible as qualifying performances for the next round.

General Rules:

  • Distances must be run and submitted between 00:00 on the first day of competition and 23:59 on the last day of competition.
  • Only one submission per runner will be accepted.
  • Runs should be names 'WA Virtual Relay'
  • Athletes must avoid popular running/walking routes at busy times.
  • Be considerate to others by keeping a minimum of 2m distance at all times when passing in public.
  • Do not drive somewhere to run - stay as close to your home as possible.
  • All runs must start and finish at around the same point (200m leeway for GPS errors) - either lapped or out and back.
  • Lapped off-track courses must not include laps of less than 1km.
  • Runs must not take place on a track.
  • Club group runs organised and supervised by a qualified coach or responsible person are acceptable for results purposes, provided this is within Welsh Government regulations at the time of the event.
  • All Welsh Government guidelines regarding physical distancing must be strictly adhered to.  Any changes to Welsh Government guidelines/law will be implemented immediately.
