WELSH 3000M & 5000M CHAMPIONSHIPS (INCLUDING BMC & WELSH WHEELCHAIR CHAMPIONSHIPS) – NEWPORT, JUNE 22
Libby Hale (Swansea Harriers) followed up her senior 1500m title at the Welsh Track and Field Championships by claiming the Under-17 3,000m title on Saturday.
Hale took the win in a new championship best performance of 9:49.68 – beating the previous record of 9:56.26 set by Ffion Price (Brecon AC) back in 2010 but narrowly missed a PB.
Sioned John (Cardiff Athletics) claimed silver in 10:23.67 with Grace Griffiths (Rhondda AC) picking up bronze in 12:56.65.
The men’s 3,000m under-17 title was won by Tomos Horn (Cardiff Athletics) in a new personal best of 9:13.76. Teammate Rhys Pladdy was second in 9:20.68 and Osian Davies (Neath Harriers) third in 9:38.01.
There was another championship best in the girls under-15 3,000m, where Nansi Griffiths (Carmarthen Harriers) won in 10:11.54 to eclipse Millie Gold’s (Cardiff Athletics) record of 10:17.46 set two years ago.
Griffiths’ time was also a big personal best and is comfortably within the Welsh Athletics National Development Programme (NDP) consideration standard.
Bella Thie (Bridgend Athletics) earned silver in 12:08.02, while Emily Jenkins (Cardiff Athletics) completed the podium with 12:13.35.
The boys 3,000m title went to Joseph Roberts (Newport Harriers) in a new PB of 9:58.88, ahead of Toby Anthony (Carmarthen Harriers) in 10:01.27. Osian Morgan (Swansea Harriers) was third in a new PB of 10:11.35.
There was another PB in the men’s 5,000m where under-23 athlete Samuel Roberts (Retford AC) took gold in 15:00.5. Devin Coombes (Bridgend Athletics) celebrated silver in 15:25.0 ahead of Callum Campion (Cardiff Athletics) in 15:29.1.
The women’s title was won by Katy Roy (Bristol and West AC) in a new PB of 18:34.3.
In the wheelchair races, T54 athlete Owen Terrell took the honours in 100m with 19.19 ahead of Toby Richardson (Yate and District AC), who gained his revenge by winning the 400m in 1:06.04 ahead of Terrell, who clocked 1:07.32.
The event also featured a number of British Milers Club (BMC) seeded 800m races featuring a range of age groups and abilities.
There were several excellent performances over the two-lap distance including under-20 and Loughborough International representative Matthew Brunnock (Western Tempo), who finished third in heat one in a PB of 1:52.86. Thomas Lyones (Neath Harriers) was fourth in a new PB of 1:53.33, which was inside the NDP consideration standard.
Under-17 NDP athlete Lucas Savage (Newport Harriers) won heat two in a big new PB of 1:56.98.
The fastest female athlete on the day was Lilly Oakenfull (Newport Harriers) who won heat 5 in a new PB of 2:13.71.
INTERNATIONAL UNDER-18 MOUNTAIN RUNNING CUP – PALENCIA, SPAIN, JUNE 22
Welsh men’s and women’s teams took on opponents from across the globe at the International Under-18 Mountain Running Cup in Spain on Saturday.
In the men’s race, which featured 57 athletes from 15 countries, the Welsh team finished 6th overall as the USA took gold.
Iwan Thomas (Carmarthen Harriers) led the way individually with a 6th place finish, club mate Finley Bruce was 22nd, Iwan Froley (Cardiff Athletics) was 30th and Merthyr College RDP athlete Joe Murphy was 40th.
In the women’s race, which featured 46 athletes, Wales finished 8th out of the 15 teams as hosts Spain took the gold medal.
Individually, Maddison Hughes (Maldwyn Harriers) finished 23rd, ahead of Beca Bown (Menai Track and Field) in 35th, Josephine Hurst (Deeside AC) in 36th and Millie Pierce (Swansea Harriers) in 41st.
BMC LOUGHBOROUGH GRAND PRIX – JUNE 22
There were a number of excellent performances by Welsh athletes at the British Milers Club Grand Prix on Saturday with a number of athletes shining ahead of next weekend’s UKA Athletics Championships and Olympic trials.
Welsh Athletics Performance Programme athlete Piers Copeland finished fourth in the 800m A race, clocking a season’s best time of 1:47.93. Transition programme athlete David Locke (Cardiff Athletics) also registered a season’s best 1:48.05 as he finished 5th.
Also in the 800m, NDP athlete and Welsh Championship silver medallist Jack Organ (Brecon) enjoyed a new PB of 1:50.61 finishing fifth in the D race.
Meanwhile, Performance Programme athlete Jenny Nesbitt (Pontypridd Roadents) finished third in the 3,000m A race in 9:01.74.
MEETING MADRID – JUNE 22
Olympic Podium Potential athlete Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC) warmed up for next weekend’s UK Athletics Championships and Olympic trials in Manchester with a fine performance over 1500m in Spain.
The Welsh 1500m record holder and Commonwealth Games medallist raced to victory in a season’s best time of 4:03.50 as she finished ahead of Spanish athletes Esther Guerrero Puigdevall in 4:04.20 and Agueda Marques Munoz in 4:04.58.
ATHLETICA GENEVE – JUNE 22
Olympic 400m relay hopeful Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers) ran 46.29 in Switzerland as he finished second in his heat behind Australia’s Luke Van Ratingen, who clocked 45.57.
At the same meeting, Joe’s sister Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers) finished fifth in her 400m heat in 53.67.
NATIONAL ATHLETICS LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP WEST ROUND 2 – YATE, JUNE 22
Swansea Harriers gained their second win of the NAL season as they amassed 593 points ahead of hosts Yate and District AC with 549 points and third placed Cardiff Athletics with 509.
Among the stand out performances on the day was Carys Jones’ (Swansea Harriers) win in the pole vault where she claimed a new personal best of 4.01m.
Patrick Swan (Swansea Harriers) won both the men’s discus with a best of 45.73m and the shot put, where he registered 17.89m.
Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games athlete Lauren Evans earned wins for Cardiff in the high jump with 1.70m and the 100m hurdles where she clocked 13.70.
BAUHAUS JUNIOR GALA MANNHEIM 2024 – JUNE 22 AND 23
Lewis Stephens (Cardiff Athletics) ran 10.79 to finish fifth in his heat in Germany, Fellow NDP athlete Eden Robinson (North Devon) jumped 5.73m to finish ninth in the long jump.
BLACK COUNTRY HAMMERFEST JGP 2 – TELFORD, JUNE 22
NDP athlete Amelia Fettis (Newport Harriers) threw a new personal best of 52.75m in Telford.
BE FIT TODAY TA OUTDOOR SERIES 2 – LEE VALLEY, JUNE 23
NDP athlete Arron Tugwell (Cardiff Archers) ran a new PB in London as he clocked 21.41 to win his 200m heat. The time gives Tugwell the qualifying standard for the European Under-18 Championships.
THE BLADE RUNNER 2024 – OAKDALE, JUNE 23
This year’s Blade Runner men’s race was won by Adam Whitaker (CDF Runners), who competed the course in 42:19 ahead of Oliver Price (Cardiff Athletics) in 42:58 and Gareth Logan (Les Croupiers).
The women’s race was won by Louise Flynn (Les Croupiers), who finished third overall, in 43:26, ahead of Meg Williams (Swansea Harriers), who was fourth overall in 44:56. Ceri Medwood (CDF Runners) was third.
