The Combined Welsh Inter-Schools / Inter-Regional Cross Country Championships will return to Monmouthshire Showground for the first time, on Saturday the 19th November. The event will mark the first Cross Country Championship of the 2022/23 season.

Athletes will compete individually and in a team for their respective Welsh regions in the Inter-Regional Championship. Whilst athletes will compete for their schools in the Inter-Schools Championship.

Senior Races

In the Senior Women’s Inter-Regional race, looking to defend her title will be Lauren Cooper (East Wales). It’s shaping up to be a good battle between Lauren and former champion Alaw Beynon-Thomas (West Wales), who led the Welsh team home at the Home Countries in Milton Keynes last weekend.

In the Senior Men’s race Inter-Regional race, hoping to improve on his place last time out will be Phill Matthews (East Wales) in the absence of current champion Matt Edwards (South Wales). Following a great display at the Cardiff Cross Challenge, the first Welsh man to cross the finish line, Ciaran Lewis (South Wales) is a strong contender.

Junior Races

U17 & U20 Girls

In the absence of last year’s U17 & U20 podium winners, Beca Haf Bown (North Wales & Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern) current U15 Champion will be looking to take advantage of the opportunity. Earlier this year she won the Welsh Schools National Cross Country title in this age group. Third place last time around, Mali MacDuff (South Wales & Cowbridge) will be running alongside her hoping to improve two places.

U17 & U20 Boys

This race is shaping up to be a classic, last year’s runners up Deri McCluskey (North Wales & Ysgol Llanfyllin) and Aled Breeze (North Wales & Welshpool High School) will be joined by last year’s U15 podium. Iwan Thomas (West Wales & Ysgol Glan y Môr) got the better of Aled Breeze earlier this year in the Welsh Schools National Cross Country Championship.

U15 Girls

Current Welsh Schools National Cross Country Champion, Libby Hale (West Wales) and last year’s U13 champion will be returning. Hale will go head-to-head with Olivia Morgan (North Wales & Ysgol Llanidloes) and Millie Pierce (West Wales), who were alongside her on the podium last time around.

U15 Boys

Joshua Sanders took home the Welsh Schools Cross Country Champion title earlier this year in February and will be looking to add another. Last year’s U13 runners up Aaron Nathan (South Wales & Cowbridge) and Garyn Tough (South Wales) will be making the step up to U15. Making up what should be an exciting race.

U13 Girls

Following a podium finish at the Home Countries in Milton Keynes Cross Challenge, Bryony Boyce (South Wales & Bryntirion) will be competing for the U13 title.

U13 Boys

The U13 Boys race is wide open with several capable and well-matched runners who have run very well over 1500m, in the London Mini Marathon and or in the cross country leagues in 2022. Keep an eye on the following runners, all of whom have a fair chance of stepping onto the top three of the podium; Solomon Silverstone (West Wales & Dyffryn Taf), Jude Jenkins (West Wales), Finlay Burns (South Wales), Lucas Howard-Machado (South Wales) and Lewis Davies (North Wales).
