This weekend sees over 50 welsh athletes heading to Bedford to compete at the England Athletics U20/U23 Championships and European Trials and you will be able to watch all the action on BBC Sport. This is the last chance for our athletes to get selected for the European Athletics U23 Championships in Gavle, Sweden between 11th-14th July 2019 and the European Athletics U20 Championships in Boras, Sweden between 18th-21st July 2019. Three Welsh athletes have already gained the standards and just need to finish in the top 2 this weekend to be guaranteed selection and several other Welsh athletes are in strong positions to run the standard ready for team selection on Tuesday 26th June 2019.

The three U20 athletes who have gained the qualifying standard already this year and just need to finish in the top 2 at the Championships are James Tomlinson (Paul Jensen) who has thrown 60.24m in the Discus, Jeremiah Azu (Helen James) who has clocked 10.27 in 100m and 21.09 in 200m and Sarah Omoregie (Gareth Lease) who has thrown 15.45m in the Shot Put.

The other athletes who are hoping to reach the qualifying standard and place in the top 2 are U23 sprinter Joseph Brier (Matt Elias) who ran 46.85 the other week, putting him just short of the qualifying standard. Jake Heyward (James Thei), who finished just 4th at the IAAF World U20 Championships last year, is also set to compete in 1500m this weekend and looking to improve on his indoor performance where he ran 3:42.84. In the field, Bethan Rees (Mark Pinner) just needs to throw a few centimetres more to achieve the qualifying distance in the Javelin Throw.

In the U20s age group, Ben Thomas (Neil Thomas) will be hoping to dip under 9:05:00 in 3,000m Steeplechase to book his place in Boras next month. Oli Barbaressi (Andrew Walling) will be looking to book his place in the 5,000m after setting a new personal best of 14:21.75 just last week. On the field, Jay Morse is seeking to follow his teammate James in the Discus and Tom Hewson (Mark Bradford) will be seeking to improve on his Championship Record at the Welsh Junior Championships last week to throw his way to Boras next month.
