Welsh Mountain Running U16, U18 & U20 Championships, Betws Y Coed – July 27

Mike Spill, Samia Jones (Stephen Livett) and Joe Reardon were the outstanding race winners of the Welsh Athletics Junior Mountain Running Championships at Betws-y-Coed on Saturday 27th July. The event also incorporated the Welsh trial races for the International Youth Cup and the British & Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships. In conjunction with a combined Northern Ireland and Wales development training camp being staged in and around Betws-y-Coed, the Northern Irish athletes were also competing in the event.

Following a week of high temperatures, the weather was much cooler for the 12noon start of the under 16/18 male, 5km/210m, 3 lap race in which Mike Spill led from the start. Menai T&F club colleague Aled Jones was 15 seconds behind him with Louis Guest (Eryri) a further 10 seconds behind. Oliver Jones (Maldwyn Harriers) won the under 16’s gold medal with a 19 second advantage over Matthew Anthony (Deeside AAC). Cameron Shaw (Menai) took bronze. Running the same course and distance, the female under 16/18 competitors were led home by Samia Jones (Menai) with a clear 38 second advantage over Eden O’Dea (Wrexham). Eden’s club colleague Sioned Cordiner won bronze. There were no Welsh under 16’s competing. In the under 20’s male/female race, run on a tough, one lap of the under 16/18 race route and 3 larger laps totalling 5.25miles with 1,585ft of climbing, there was a close tussle between Joe Reardon (Aberdare) and Tom Wood (Eryri) early on before Joe pulled clear to win by a 23 second margin. Ifan Oldfield (Wrexham) taking the bronze medal. Jenna Bagnall (Prestatyn) was the only Welsh representative in the race and won an uncontested gold but ahead of the two Northern Irish athletes.

English Senior Championships, Manchester – July 27-28

Welsh athletes traveled up to compete in the very rainy and windy Manchester for the English Senior Championships.

A stand out performance came from Hannah Brier (Glyn Hawkes) who finished 2nd in the 100m to take silver, running 11.97 into a strong headwind and show she is in good form. Other stand out performances of the weekend came from Hannah Williams (Darrell Maynard) who finished 4th in 100m in 12.17, Rhiannon Linnington-Payne (Matt Elias) who finished 5th in 400m running 55.32 and from Swansea Harrier Lauren Williams (Wynford Leyshon) who finished 5th in 59.26.

Both Joshua Brown and Amy Odunaiya (David Norton) ran strong through the rounds to reach their finals. Joshua finished 7th in 100m, running 10.90 and Amy ran 24.88 in the 200m to take 7th.

In the field, Bethan Rees finished just shy of the medals in 4th with a throw of 48.23m in the Javelin. Thomas Walley (Amanda Broadhurst) finished 7th in the Pole Vault and Jonathon Bailey (Fuzz Caan) finished 8th in the High Jump, jumping 1.90m.

Helena Tipping Wrexham 10K, Wrexham – July 28

The Helena Tipping Wrexham 10K took place in Wrexham yesterday with Liverpool Harrier Charlie Hulson coming home first in a quick time of 29.59. He was followed by Dave Bennett of Ellesmere Port RC in a time of 33.00 followed closely behind by Chris Williams from Vale Royal AC n 33.06 

In the Women's race, Amie Bagnall of Prestatyn RC in a time of 38.01. The next welsh women home was Ceri Cook of Buckley RC in 41:40 followed by temmate Jennifer Rambaldi in 41.49

Tenby 10K, Tenby – July 28

The sun came out for the Tenby 10K yesterday.

In the men’s race, Jamie Parry was first home from Parc Bryn Back Running Club in a time of 34.10. Llanelli AC runner Nicholas Sheehan came through the line in 34.50 to take second followed by teammate David Keenan in 35.13.

In the Women’s race Amman Valley Harriers Sioned Howells came home first in 39.23 followed by Michelle Cole of 3M Gorseinon Road Runners in 42.54. 3rd place finisher then went to Julia Williams who finished in a time of 44.29.

Magor 10K, Undy – July 27

Undy hosted their annual Magor 10K Saturday with Parc Bryn Bach runner Lee Aherne finishing 3rd in a time of 34.28. His teammate Harry Davies was the second Welshman home in 7th running 35.55

In the Women’s race, Lliswerry runners’ Elizabeth Dimond was the first women home in 39.32 followed closely by fellow Welsh Women Niki Morgan in a time of 39.42.

The 5000m Track Challenge, Nottingham – July 27

Swansea Harriers Jonathan Hopkins and Kristian Jones both ran in Nottingham on Saturday for the 5000m Track Challenge. Both were in the fastest heat of the evening and both set new personal bests. Jonathon ran 13:57.26 to take the 2nd fastest time of the competition and Kristian ran 14:00.87 which was the 4th fastest time of the competition.
