Weekend Roundup: Big wins in Stirling and new personal bests in Valencia and Wales

Stirling Cross Challenge (incl Home Counties International), Stirling – Jan 11
Stirling brought some challenging conditions for the Welsh athletes last Saturday. The rain and the mud barely lightened up as each age category took to the field for the Stirling Cross Challenge including the Home Counties International.
In the senior men’s race, Kris Jones ran a controlled race and recovered well after a fall early in the race to take the win and lead the Welsh senior team to a team silver alongside James Hunt who finished 5th and Matthew Edwards who finished in 29th.
In the senior women’s race, Bronwen Owen ran a smart race staying with the leading group to finish 3rd and take home a bronze medal.
There was also strong performances by the women’s U20 and men’s U17 team who both won team silver at the event. The U20W included Samia Jones, Ashleigh Willis, Mia Goddard and Nia Clatworthy. The U17M quartet included Frank Morgan, Dafydd Jones, Jacob Reynold and Rhys Llewellyn.
Other standout performances came in the U13 boys race from Carmarthen Harriers’ Iwan Thomas who finished 5th overall. U20 women Samia Jones and Ashleigh Willis had good races. Jones finished just inside the top 10 in a respectable 9th place and Willis finished close behind her in 11th. Lloyd Sheppard also did well to stay with some top runners finishing 14th overall.
North Wales Indoor Championships, Connah’s Quay – Jan 12
Yesterday North Wales held their annual indoor championships yesterday with new personal bests and season bests galore including U20 Zach Price who clocked a new pb of 7.01 in the 60m. U20 Moli Jones followed with a season’s best of 7.93.
F20 Shot Putter Sabrina Fortune threw a season’s best of 12.82m with Thomas Walley also jumping his best so far this season with 4.63m.
West Wales Indoor Championships, Swansea – Jan 11
Swansea played host to the West wales Championships last weekend with some stand out performances from Ceirion Hopkins clocking 7.11 in the 60m, not far from his personal best and Ieuan Hosgood is showing good form jumping close to his personal best set just a few weeks ago with 4.30m in the pole vault.
North Wales Senior Cross Country League, Shrewsbury – Jan 11
In the senior men’s race, Tom Wood of the Eryri was the first Welshman home, helping the team to maintain their 4th place position in division one. The Deeside U17 men continued their dominance at the top with Huw Wynne-Jones and Tyler Cartlidge finishing 1st and 2nd respectively.
In the senior women’s race, Gemma Moore finished 2nd to help the women retain their lead at the top of division one.
10K Valencia Ibercaja, Valencia, ESP – Jan 11
Jenny Nesbitt (Chris Jones) clocked an impressive new personal best in 32:42 taking her to 5th on the Welsh all-time list.
Beantown Challenge, Cambridge MA, USA– Jan 10-11
Welsh athlete studying in the US, Sarah Omoregie threw a new personal best of 15.55m in the shot put and a new personal best of 16.22 in the weight throw.
