WORLD ATHLETICS UNDER- 20 CHAMPIONSHIPS – OREGON, AUGUST 5-9
Matilda Quick (Swansea Harriers) was the only Welsh athlete representing Great Britain at the World Athletics Championships in the United States last week.
Quick opened her campaign clocking 14.39 in the 100m hurdles for 924 points.
Next up was the high jump where the Welsh athlete recorded a best of 1.69m for 842 points before going on to send the shot put out to 11.88m, collecting another 653 points and putting her in 13th place
Quick rounded off the first day’s competition by running 26.11 in the 200m for another 788 points leaving her in 17th place at the end of the first day on 3207 points.
Day two got underway with a difficult long jump, where Quick has a PB of 5.98m, but managed a distance of 3.57m for 214 points.
However, she recovered well in the javelin to produce a new personal best of 33.29m to bring 539 points.
The final discipline of two days’ gruelling competition, as always, was the 800m where Quick ran 2:33.34 for 652 points.
At the end of the seven events, Quick’s total of 4612 – some way short of her PB of 5422 - brought her 22 place overall.
Gold was won by Finland’s Enni Virjonen with 6214. The highest placed GB athlete was Thea Brown in fourth place with 5826.
WEST WALES JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT 3 – CARMARTHEN, AUGUST 8
More than 270 athletes gathered in Carmarthen on Saturday for the third West Wales Junior Development fixture.
The team event was won by Swansea Harriers with 792 points ahead of Carmarthen Harriers 552 points and Brecon AC 310 points.
Saturday’s results mean the final league standings after three fixtures are:
1. Swansea Harriers - 2,642 pts (24)
2. Carmarthen Harriers - 1,268 pts (20)
3. Brecon AC - 1,050 pts (18)
4. Neath Harriers - 878 pts (15)
5. Bridgend AC 638 pts - (13)
6. Llanelli AAC - 699 pts (9)
7. Pembrokeshire Harriers - 119 pts (5)
8. TROTS - 141 pts (4)
NORTHERN TRACK AND FIELD LEAGUE – WEST ONE SOUTH – DEESIDE, AUGUST 8

CAERPHILLY 5KM FESTIVAL OF ROAD RUNNING INCLUDING THE WELSH 5K CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026 – AUGUST 9
The Caerphilly 5km is a fully closed road-running event set around the iconic Caerphilly Castle.
The evening incorporated a number of races designed to create an exciting atmosphere for runners and spectators.
And so it proved, with Turkish athlete Abdurrahman Gediklioglu winning the overall Welsh 5K Championship race in 14:41. The first Welsh athlete home and Welsh champion was Owen Roberts (Meirionnydd Running Club), who was second overall in 14.49.
The first female home, and Welsh Champion, was Kayley Price (Newport Harriers) who claimed the title in 16:52.
The men’s elite mile was won by Jack Davies (Unsanctioned Athletics) in 4:34, while the women’s race was comfortably won by Bryony Boyce (Cardiff Athletics) in 5:10.
The men’s Welsh Masters 5K title was won by Marc Hobbs (Swansea Harriers) in 15:59, while Rhian Maloney won the women’s race in 17:59.
STRATFORD SPEED GP – LONDON, AUGUST 9
A clutch of Welsh sprinters made the trip up the M4 to London for the latest Stratford Speed GP
Sam Gordon (Cardiff Athletics) stormed to an emphatic victory in his men’s 100m first round heat clocking 10.46. Cameron Jones (Menai Track and Field) was fourth in 11.09 in the same race.
Gordon went even faster in the second round, posting 10.44 as he finished fourth in his heat. Jones ran 11.02 finishing second in his race.
T11 Transition Programme sprinter and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games competitor James Ledger clocked 12.06 finished fourth in his first round heat. In the second round, Ledger won his heat in 11.79.
Elsewhere in the men’s 100m first round heats, Transition Programme sprinter Lewis Stephens (Swansea Harriers) was paired with his clubmate Eniola Adedotun in the same race. Stephens finished second in 10.65 while Adedotun was a place behind in 10.66.
The second round saw Lewis finish third in 10.61, with Adedotun finishing sixth in 10.65, once again running in the same heat.
There were three more Swansea Harriers in heat 8 of the first round where Eli Onyewu was second in 11.03, Marek Warzocha third in 11.11 and Freddie Steele fifth in 11.16.
The second round saw Onyewu win his heat in 10.81, while Warzocha was third in his heat in 11.08 and Steele was also third in his heat in 10.996
Swansea were certainly out in force in the capital, as heat 10 in the first round saw William Hawker finish fifth in 10.73. His second round saw him post 10.87.
In the women’s 100m first round, Under-16 athlete Abbi Beadle (Cardiff Athletics) placed third in her heat in 12.63. Under-14 sprinter Summer Beadle (Cardiff Athletics) was second in her heat in 13.17.
In round two, Abbi won her heat in 12.51, while Summer posted 13.09 finishing fifth in her race.
Wheelchair racer Imogen Ashwell-Rice (Newport Harriers) placed fourth in her first round 100m heat in 24.91. In her second heat, Ashwell-Rice was second in 25.33.
In the men’s 200m, Olympian and Performance Programme athlete Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers) won his heat in 20.96. Cameron Jones (Menai Track and Field) finished second in his heat in 22.10.
Over 400m, Sian Harry (Belgrave Harriers) claimed second place in her heat in 54.09. National Development Programme hurdler Sophie Lisk (Cardiff Archers) placed fifth running on the flat in 57.07.
In the men’s races, Evan Blackman (Corby AC) finished sixth in his heat in 47.12.
BRITISH MILERS CLUB GRAND PRIX – ST MARY’S UNIVERSITY, TWICKENHAM, AUGUST 9
Three of Wales’ Commonwealth Games stars were in 1500m action at the BMC Grand Prix in London on Sunday – just a week after the athletics programme closed in Glasgow.
In a high quality race, drawing runners from across the UK as well as Canada, Australia and France, Ava Lloyd (Wigan and District), who contested the mile final in Glasgow, claimed the win in a huge new PB of 4:01.78.
Lloyd’s time slashed more than four-and-a-half seconds from her previous best run in Belgium last August. The time also places Lloyd third on the British Under-23 all-time list behind Laura Muir and Zola Budd.
Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC), who narrowly missed out on a final place in Glasgow, finished seventh in 4:04.20.
Cari Hughes (Menai Track and Field), who broke her own Welsh 3,000m steeplechase record in Scotland, was 11th in 4:06.52.
Elsewhere in the 1500m races, the men’s F race saw National Development Programme athlete Henry Evans (Cardiff Athletics) finish 10th in a new PB of 3:49.60.
In the 800m races, Piers Copeland (Pontypridd Roadents) finished fifth in the men’s B race in 1:47.29.
The men’s F race saw NDP runner Sam Hembry (Bromsgrove and Redditch) finish fourth in a PB of 1:49.57, one place ahead of fellow NDP Thomas Loynes (Neath Harriers), who also claimed a PB of 1:50.11. SIAB winner Ewan Sparey (Bristol and West) was eighth in a PB of 1:50.99.
Aidan Walker (Banbury/Cardiff University) won the 800m I race in a new PB of 1:53.05.
The men’s 2000m steeplechase saw Brychan Price Davies (Swansea Harriers) finish fifth in 6:09.55.
