Chester Marathon, Masters International, 8 October

In the final Masters International Road Race between England and Wales at the Chester Marathon there were some great results from Welsh athletes who performed brilliantly despite the non-autumn weather. With temperatures creeping up to the mid twenty degrees and a tough second half of the course all of the athletes did well in difficult conditions.

Wales had three individual age group winners on the day: Martin Green, NWRRC who wo the M45 category; Lee Aherne (Parc Bryn Bach) who won the M55 age group and Louise Flynn (Les Croupiers) who won the W40 category. In addition, Louise was also third overall in the international masters event and Lee completed a great year with his third win (and one second) out of the four international races.

Fiona Davies (Pontypridd) finished runner up in the W65 age group and Susan Watson (Les Croupiers) (W55), Rachael Baralos (Caerphilly Runners) (W35) and Liam McIntyre (Run Through) (M40) all picked up bronze medals in the international match.

The event also doubled up as the British Masters Championships and Welsh Athletics Masters Marathon Championships. Louise Flynnn, Martin Green and Lee Aherne all won their age groups; Fiona Davies was runner up and James Elgar (Mickey Morris RC) (M35), Liam McIntyre, and Nesta McCluskey (Maldwyn) (W45) all picked up bronze medals.
