NCAA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – HAYWARD FIELD, EUGENE, OREGON, JUNE 7

On Friday morning news filtered through of two brilliant performances by Welsh athletes at the hugely prestigious NCCA Finals in Eugene, Oregon.

Sarah Omoregie (Vanderbilt/Cardiff Athletics) and Amber Simpson (Illinois University/Wrexham) gained top eight finishes at the championships, bringing them All American First Team status.

In the shot put, Omoregie threw 17.35m to finish seventh and gain her first ever All American first team selection.

Meanwhile, in the hammer, Simpson finished eighth with a best throw of 67.73m to become Illinois University’s first ever female hammer thrower to gain All American honours.

Both athletes are entered to compete at next weekend’s Welsh Athletics Championships in Cardiff.

INTER-REGIONAL TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024 – DEESIDE, JUNE 8

North Wales took the honours with a comfortable team win at the Inter-Regional Track and Field Championships in Deeside on Saturday.

The host team amassed 405 points ahead of South Wales (217), East Wales (190) and West Wales (184).

Among the stand-out individual performances of the day which helped North Wales to their victory was Martha Bown’s personal best of 2:22.06 to win the under-15 girls 800m.

Meanwhile, Aiden Angilletta, boosted the winning region’s total points with wins in the under-15 boys 80m hurdles, the high jump and the 4x100m.

BRITISH MILERS CLUB GRAND PRIX – WORLD ATHLETICS CHALLENGER – WATFORD, JUNE 8

There were a number of excellent performances from Welsh Athletics performance pathway athletes and Welsh internationals on Saturday.

Transition athlete Justin Davies (Team Bath) won the men’s 800m B race in a superb new PB of 1:46.71, followed home in second place by fellow transition athlete David Locke (Cardiff Athletics), who clocked 1:48.35.

In the men’s 1500m B race, another transition athlete Osian Perrin (Menai Track and Field) emerged triumphant in a new PB of 3:39.20. Loughborough International team member Ben Reynolds (Cardiff Athletics) was fourth, also in a new PB of 3:42.45.

Performance pathway athlete Jenny Nesbitt (Pontypridd Roadents) finished ninth in the women’s 1500m A race in 4:19.55, while Loughborough International representative Rachel McClay (Bracknell AC) was fourth in the women’s 800m B race in 2:07.21.

There were PBs in the 5000m B race for Lloyd Sheppard Brown (Cardiff Athletics) who was second in 14:15.19 and Adam Barber (Harborough), who won the 1500m G race in 3:51.70.

NOTTWIL WORLD PARA ATHLETICS GRAND PRIX – JUNE 8

T47 athlete John Bridge (Cardiff Athletics) ran a 52.03 400m season’s best as he finished third in his final.

Meanwhile, there was an excellent PB for James Ledger (DSW Para Athletics) when he ran 11.55 in his T11 100m heat, before going on to finish fourth in the final where he registered 11.65.

EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – ROME, JUNE 9

A brilliant new personal best by Clara Evans (Pontypridd Roadents) helped Great Britain to team gold in the half marathon on the streets of Rome on Sunday morning.

The Welsh marathon record holder crossed the line in 1:10.06 to claim a valuable ninth-place finish which helped earn the GB team its first gold medal of the championships.

The Chris Jones-coached athlete was in the leading group during the first half of the race and had been holding eighth place before being pipped late on by Mekdes Woldu of France.

Evans’ GB team-mate Calli Hager-Thackery (Hallamshire) earned an individual bronze medal in the race won by Norway’s Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal in a championship record of 1:08.09.

The GB team’s other competitors in the half marathon, Abbie Donelly (Lincoln Wellington) and Lauren McNeill (Hallamshire) finished sixth and 17th respectively.

Following her five-second PB in the heat of Rome, where the race finished in the iconic Stadio Olimpico, Evans said: “Running with the girls is really great.

“We are a great team, we’ve run a lot of races together already and we really get along so when it was hurting we were thinking just keep running for that time and we were doing it for each other out there.

“I didn’t mind the loop course, it was really nice to see familiar faces on the course and it really just kept you going and was nice when you were hurting – you’d see a familiar face and it helped a little bit so it was really nice.”

SWANSEA UNIVERSITY HALF MARATHON & FRONT RUNNER 5 MILE 2024 – JUNE 9

Thousands of runners of all abilities hit the streets of Swansea for the 10th edition of the city’s half marathon on Sunday morning.

And there was a home win in the women’s elite race where Emily Marchant (Swansea Harriers) was first across the line in 1:17.42. Second was Marchant’s Swansea club-mate Sioned Howells in 1:19.47, ahead of Alice Kelly (Exmouth) in 1:19.50.

Winner of the men’s race was Omar Ahmed (Birchfield Harriers), who crossed the line in 1:03.02, to make it a hat-trick of wins in the event.

Another three-time winner Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) continued the excellent form he has shown on the roads this year by finishing second in 1:03.41, ahead of Dean Williamson (Colchester) who clocked 1:07.55.

The wheelchair half marathon was won by Josh Hickinbotton in 1:05.47 ahead of Gary Cooper in 1:08.29 and Steve Montgomery in 1:10.06.

The inaugural five miler men’s race was won by Ben Williams (Swansea Harriers) in 27:41 ahead of Sam Milligan (Peak Performance Wales) in 29:28 and Stuart Crees (Les Croupiers) in 33:23.

The women’s race was won by 15-year-old Chloe Hartley-Green (Swansea Harriers) in 34:55. Second place went to Hannah Brown (Honiton RC) in 37:48 and third to Lara Schandlinger in 40:20.

WELSH CASTLES RELAY – JUNE 8 AND 9

Hundreds of runners from across Wales and beyond took part in the 2024 edition of the race which started at Caernarfon Castle on Saturday morning and finished 20 stages later at Cardiff Castle on Sunday afternoon.

Taking the honours in the open category were Highgate Harriers, who completed the challenge in a total time of 18 hours 44 minutes and 22 seconds.

Second were Pontypridd Roadents in 18:52.44, ahead of Kent, who finished in 19:24.44.

Winners of the ladies race were Les Croupiers, who travelled from north to south in 23:32:12. Just over a minute behind them in 24:34.46 were Team Bath, while Sale Harriers were third in 24:51.50.

Les Croupiers were also top of the podium in the veterans event, finishing in a total of 22:23.24, ahead of Pontypridd Roadents in 22:36.57 and Ealing Eagles in 22:48.59.

The business category was won by Burges Salmon in 24:13.07, who were pursued home by South Wales Police in 25:27.48 and EA/DEFRA Harriers in 25:50.01.
