FIFTH AVENUE MILE – NEW YORK, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AAC) ran her fastest time to date at the prestigious Fifth Avenue Mile in New York on Sunday.

The Commonwealth Games medallist and multiple Welsh record holder finished fourth in a time of 4.20 – surpassing her time of 4.22 from the same race back in 2018.

Courtney-Bryant holds the fastest ever mile time run by a Welsh woman on the track – 4:16.38 set at the Monaco Diamond League meeting last year.

The women’s race was won by the USA’s Karissa Schweizer in 4:14.8, equalling Laura Muir’s course record from 2018.

The men’s race on Sunday saw 1500m world champion Josh Kerr break the long-standing course record of 3:47.52 set in 1981 when he clocked 3:44.3.

The Fifth Avenue Mile, known for its straight, fast course along one of Manhattan's most famous thoroughfares, is one of the highlights of the annual road racing calendar.
