Welsh Schools & Welsh Athletics Indoor Combined Events Championships

Indoor competition returned to NIAC this weekend, with the Indoor Combined Events Championships taking place on Sunday. A day packed full of strong performances and fierce competition, all the athletes taking part got to develop their skills and execute their performances over a variety of events. Welsh Athletics are committed to "Develop the competition pathway to support long term athlete development and retention" and are keen for young athletes to continue to run, jump, and throw up through the age groups before specialising. The event was a joint on with Welsh Schools and the support of so many schools and their teachers who attended was very much appreciated. 

In the Under 14 Girls Quad event, a close competition Bethan Deeks (Bridgend) scored the most points (1873) to take top spot on the podium, with Olivia Schrimsaw (Deeside) scoring 1843 points for second and Beatrice Morgan (Carmarthen) rounding off the podium with 1807 points. In the U14 Boys equivalent, it was Rorey Gardner (Rhymney) who took gold, scoring 1496 points, ahead of Tom Gilbert (Dyffryn Aman) (1281) and Orli Corcoran (Rhymney) (1055) the latter who came into the final event with one point separating them.

The Under 16 Girls Pentathlon was won convincingly by Nia Powell (Archers), scoring 3235 points, ahead of Matilda Quick (Swansea), who scored 2909 points and Megan Taylor (Archers), whom scored 2782 points. In the Under 16 Boys event, Ben Parker of Aberdare scored 2853 points to take gold, with Salem Mbimu-Kiambi (Cardiff) scoring 2763 points and Osian Parry (Archers) 2422 points to round of the podium.

The U18 Girls Pentathlon was just as exciting, with Stephanie Jones (Stockport) scoring 3509 points to take the win, ahead of Sophie Lisk (Archers) with 3411 points and Jessica Lee (Carmarthen) who scored 3341 points. It was Dylan Morgan (Swansea) who reached the top of the podium in the U18 Boys Pentathlon, scoring 3089 points, ahead of Iolo Grant (Archers) who scored 2902 points and Evan Cole (Swansea) who scored 2609 points.

This event doubled up as a selection event for the Combined International to be held later this year. Team announcements will be made soon. Congratulations to all that participated.

Round Up of other results:

  • The Richard Burton 10km was won by Dewi Griffiths in 31:32 and Donna Morris in 37:36. Full Results to follow.
  • Over in Los Angeles, Natasha Cockram had her biggest win to date, taking first place in the LA Marathon. Just 5 weeks after running 2:32.32 at the London Marathon, Cockram ran 2:33.17 to win the Women's race convincingly by over 4 minutes. She also finished 7th overall.
  • Cross country season is in full swing now, and the North Wales Junior Cross Country League returned for its second fixture of the season. At Dolerw Park, Newtown, it was a win for Jacob Welsh (Deeside) in the U15 Boys and Beca Brown (Menai) in the U15 Girls. Full results can be found here.
  • Across the pond, Bryn Woodall (Colwyn Bay) placed 6th in the Appalachian AC Championships, Canton GA, USA, whilst in Spain, Angharad Davies (Carmarthen) placed 11th in the Cross Internacional de San Sebastián.
