Weekend Round Up (5th/6th Feb)

It was a busy weekend of action for a number of Welsh Athletes. Away from the U13, U17 and U20 Indoor Championships, where a full round up can be found here, here is a round up of the other great Welsh perfromances.
DNA Glasgow
In an exciting 2 hours of competition at the newly created DNA Event in Glasgow, the Welsh team put on a strong showing, finishing just outside the podium in 4th place.
With consistent performances in all events, highlights included; team captain Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff) placing 2nd in the Men’s 60m, recording a time of 6.64s, backing up his strong performance in Manchester the other week. In the Women’s long jump, Rebecca Champman (Cardiff) also scored a fine 2nd place, jumping 6.19m.
The last and final event, where everything was to play for, ‘The Hunt’, a mixed medley relay, Wales battled hard and finished a strong 4th place, deciding their overall position.
This new innovative team event, aimed at bringing the sport into the 21st Century has certainly wet the appetite for future competitions, where the Welsh team will look to hunt down a podium spot!

Lliswerry 8 Miles
The annual Lliswerry 8 event returned in Newport this weekend for it's 35th consecutive year. Nicknamed the "flattest race on the planet", it's a popular event often used as a time traill race leading up to the spinrg marathon season.
Paul Graham (Pontypridd) took full advantage of this, winning the race in 40:39, closely followed by Jonathan Butler (Swansea) in second with 40:50 and Matthew Edmonds (Newport) in third place with 42:41.

BUCS Cross Country Championships
In one of the best university events of the year, this years BUCS Cross Country Championships took place in Hillingdon, hosted by Brunel University. With teams traveling from all over the UK, highlights included:
Men's Long Race (10km)
- Mike Ward (5th)
- Lloyd Sheppard (42nd)
- Tom Gostellow (57th)
Women's Long Race (6km)
- Lauren Cooper (26th)

England Athletics Winter 10,000m & 5,000m Race Walking Championships
Heather Lewis (Pembrokeshire) and Bethan Davies (Cardiff) cleared up the top two spots on the podium at the Winter Race Walking Championships. With both athletes having secured the Commonwelath Games Nomination Standard in the 10km race walk, it was a great Oppertunity for them both to see their current form.
Heather walked herself to a time of 46:47.60 for the 10,000m, whilst Bethan stopped the clock in 48:17.80. A great start to the season for both athletes!

In the senior women’s 5,000m event, U17 Grace Griffiths (Pembrokeshire) placed second overall, and set a fantastic new personal best of 25:38 and a new Welsh U17 record.
World Atheltics Indoor Tour Special Bronze
Lili Church (Carmarthen) placed 4th in the U20 high jump, with a jump of 1.65m. Johnathon Bailey (Cardiff) placed 17th in the mens high jump, jumping 1.95m.
New Balance Indoor Grand Prix
Jenny Nesbitt (Cardiff) ran a World Indoor Qualifying time over the 3,000m in New York, setting a new Female only Personal Best of 8:48.48.
