RALEIGH RELAYS, NORTH CAROLINA, MARCH 28
Gwenno Goode (Cardiff Athletics/La Salle University) ran the second fastest Welsh 3,000m steeplechase time ever when she finished third in 9:56.80 in North Carolina on Friday.
Only Kate Seary (Cardiff Athletics) has run faster, clocking 9:55.96 at the same event in 2022.
LLANBEDR TO BLAENAVON FELL RACE INCLUDING THE WELSH MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS (LONG) – MARCH 29
The Llanbedr to Blaenavon fell race took place on Saturday, incorporating the Welsh Mountain Running Championships (long).
The race is run over 15.8 miles with a 4,500ft ascent. Competitors set off from Llanbedr and taking on challenges including the summits of the Sugar Loaf and Blorenge Mountains before finishing at Blaenavon Rugby Club.
The men’s race was emphatically won by Wyndham Turner (Mynydd Du), who completed the challenging course in 2:16.40, crossing the line ahead of Wilf Evans (CDF Runners) in 2:23.53 and Ed Gwynne-Harris (Builth) in 2:25.30.
The honours in the women’s race went to Jo Meek (Winchester and District AC) who won in 2:36.32. Second place went to Katie Ironside (Mynyddwyr De Cymru) in 2:40.01, while Rhian Probert (Mynydd Du) was third in 2:48.58.
SAN DOMENICO 20/10 MILER – MERTHYR TYDFIL, MARCH 30
Both the men’s and women’s 20 mile records were broken at the San Domenico 20 and 10 Miler on Sunday.
Wales Commonwealth Games marathoner Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) obliterated the men’s 20 mile record in Merthyr Tydfil.
Griffiths, who will line up in the elite field at this spring’s London Marathon, crossed the line in a rapid 1:41.14, wiping Pontypridd Roadent Dan Bodman’s previous best of 1:52.24 from the record books.
Wales’ second fastest man over the marathon distance, finished more than 16 minutes ahead of second placed Mark Price, who crossed the line in 1:57.46. Oliver Webb (Cardiff Triathletes) was third in 1:58.30.
The women’s race was won by Sioned Howells (Swansea Harriers) who not only finished fifth overall, but surpassed Holly Rush’s women’s race record of 2:08.10.
Howells crossed the line in 2:06.01, with Ceri Merwood (CDF Runners) second in 2:12.22 and Kristie O’Connell-James (Pontypridd Roadents) third in 2:18.08.
The men’s 10 miler was won by Daniel Smith (Pontypridd Roadents), who crossed the line in 54:27. Sam Joseph (Swansea Harriers) was second in 57:51, while Darren Bishop (Pontypridd Roadents) was third in 57:56.
The women’s race was won by former Welsh 3,000m steeplechase record holder Lauren Cooper (Parc Bryn Bach) who stopped the clock in 1:00.46. Team mate Kani Hinshelwood (Parc Bryn Bach) was second in 1:06.13 and Ffion Davies (Port Talbot Harriers) third in 1:06.27.
GLOUCESTER HALF MARATHON AND 10K
A number of Welsh club athletes made the relatively short journey across the border to compete in the Gloucester Half Marathon and 10K.
The women’s 10K race saw Katie Pescod (Caldicott Running Club) finish fourth in 46:23, while Leonie Roberts (Fairwater Runners Cwmbran) was eighth in 45:39.
In the women’s half marathon Emma Wyatt-Haines (Les Croupiers) was fifth in 1:29.01, while club mate Sarah Hamill was ninth in 1:31.41.
