NOVUNA UK ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – BIRMINGHAM JUNE 20-21

WELSH athletes plundered two Welsh records, two national titles, an array of podium places and a weekend full of excellent performances at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

Leading the way was Freya Jones (Harrow AC) who broke her own Welsh record on the way to winning javelin gold with a huge throw of 58.12m.

Commonwealth Games-bound Charlotte Henrich (Invicta East Kent AC) also set a new Welsh 400m record of 50.58 as she claimed a bronze medal. Henrich’s time surpasses Michelle Scutt’s 44-year-old previous best mark.

There was also another gold medal for decorated Welsh race walker Bethan Davies (Cardiff Athletics) who once again stood on the top step of the UK Championships podium after winning the women’s 5,000m in 23:43.39.

The challenge builds towards a brutal finale, where runners tackle a technical upper section before confronting the iconic “Stairway to Heaven” ladder.

RAS Y BANNAU/ BRECON BEACONS FELL RACE AND WELSH SENIOR LONG DISTANCE MOUNTAIN CHAMPIONSHIPS – BRECON BEACONS, JUNE 20

There were hot, humid conditions and an extended course for competitors to contend with in the Brecon Beacons on Saturday.

The addition of Fan y Big to add some ascent and an extra 3km downhill to finish in Talybont-on-Usk for better parking and facilities resulted in a big day out on the hills.

The Brecon Beacons Fell Race is a long-standing distance fell race in South Wales which takes in the majority of the Bannau Brycheiniog and this year totalled 34km and 1700m of ascent.

The race also incorporated the Welsh Fell Running Association long distance champs. There was quality in the field and a range of running clubs from in and outside Wales represented.

Gary Davies did a fantastic job of organising the event and making adjustments to accommodate both Welsh Athletics and WFRA champs event requirements. A great job also from the marshal team who had to deal with midges and no wind on top rather than the usual exposed conditions.

Welsh Athletics results:

Women: 1. Bethan Logan, Mynydd Du (3:53:34), 8th overall; 2. Rhian Probert (V50), Mynydd Du (4:08:20), 15th overall; 3. Sarah Jeremiah (V50), Parc Bryn Bach (5:06:27), 30th overall.

Men/Open: 1. Huw Davies, Mercia Fell Runners (3:25:05); 2. Owain Williams (V40), Eryri Harriers (3:39:30), 4th overall; 3. Wyndham Turner, Mynydd Du (3:40:33), 5th overall.
