Welsh Schools National Track & Field Championships, 1 July

Saturday saw over 500 pupils descended on Cardiff International Sports Campus for the 74th edition of the Welsh Schools National Track & Field Championships. For another year Cardiff and the Vale claimed victory in five of the age categories, whilst Afan Need Tawe took victory in the senior men’s category.

There were some great performances, with Ben Parker (Glamorgan Valleys) setting a new Championships Best Performance in the long jump, with a jump of 7.11m. And several athletes recently selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games were in action as they prepare for Trinbago.

Wanda Diamon League Stockholm, 2 July

Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Poole AC) was in action in the Women’s 1500m in Stockholm on Sunday, finishing in fifth with a time of 4:03.81.

BMC Grand Prix – World Athletics Challenger, 1 July

On Saturday in Watford, Dafydd Jones (Swansea Harriers) set a new Personal Best of 8:12.90 over 3000m, and also the qualifying standard for the 2023 European Athletics U20 Championships next month.

Beth Kidger (Brighton Phoenix) was also in action in Watford. Kidger took victory in the Women’s 1500m B Final, with a Season Best performance of 4:19.60.

Ogi Porthcawl 10K, 2 July

On Sunday thousands headed to Porthcawl’s historic Esplanade for the Ogi Porthcawl 10K in warm but windy conditions.

In the Elite Races Birchfield Harriers took victory in both the Women’s and Men’s Elite Races. In the Women’s Elite Race Lily Patridge (Birchfield Harriers) took victory in 33:27, she was followed home by Clara Evans (Pontypridd Roadents) in 35:12 and Alaw Evans (Les Croupiers) completed the top three position with a time of 35:44.

Whilst Kadar Omar (Birchfield Harriers) took victory in the Elite Men’s Race, finishing just outside of the 30-minute mark with a time of 30:15. Shaun Antell (Bideford AC) was next home in 30:22 and Jon Butler (Swansea Harriers) finished in third with 30:26. Welsh 10K Champion Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) finished just outside of the top 3 in 30:39.

Activity Alliance National Junior Disability Athletics Championships, 1 & 2 July

In Coventry over the weekend, the National Junior Athletics Championships took place to honour Anthony Hughes MBE, which saw a number of Welsh athletes in action.

Recently selected Commonwealth Youth Games athletes Will Bishop (Deeside & DSW Para Academy), Tomi Roberts-Jones (DSW Para Academy) and Mia Lloyd (Carmarthen & District Harriers & DSW Para Academy) were in action. 

There were new Personal Bests for both Will Bishop (Deeside & DSW Para Academy) and Tomi Roberts-Jones (DSW Para Academy over 100m. Bishop ran 14.77s and Roberts-Jones ran13.55s. 

Mia Llod (Carmarthen & District Harriers & DSW Para Academy) took victory in her 100m race with a time of 27.55.
