SCHOOLS COMBINED EVENTS INTERNATIONAL – GLASGOW, NOVEMBER 16
MEDALS of all colours were won by a 15-strong Welsh team at the Schools Combined Events International in Glasgow on Saturday.
Leading the individual honours at the Emirates Arena was National Development Programme athlete Luca Phillips (Cowbridge Comprehensive/Cardiff and the Vale).
The Welsh boys team captain claimed individual gold in the Over-18 Boys competition.
The Cardiff Archer opened his challenge by clocking 8:05 over 60m hurdles – the fastest time of the competition.
Phillips followed up with a new shot put personal best of 11.37m, before claiming another PB of 22.81 in the 200m.
The long jump saw him leap out to 6.88m before rounding off his competition with another PB of 2:06.65 in the 800m.
Phillips sealed his individual victory with a total of 3,780 – 28 points ahead of England’s Ruben Stovell in second place. Luc McLeod (Scotland) was third with 3,712.
There was a silver medal in the Over 18 Girls for another NDP athlete Matilda Quick (Gower College/Afan Nedd Tawe).
The women’s team captain made a strong start to the competition with the longest shot put of the competition – 12.51m, followed by a time of 9.13 in the 60m hurdles.
Quick recorded a best distance of 5.42m in the long jump before achieving a best of 1.66m in the high jump to equal her personal best for the discipline.
A time of 2:34.54 in the 800m meant the Swansea Harrier amassed a points total of 3,698 which earned her a silver medal behind Ireland’s Tara O’Connor, who claimed gold with 3809.
Quick’s performance helped the Welsh Girls Under-18 team to claim the bronze medal, backed up by Beatrice Morgan (Llandovery College/Dyfed) who was ninth overall with 3364 and Olivia Scrimshaw (Ysgol Bryn Hyfryd/North East Wales) who placed 12th overall with 3,268.
Wales’ third individual medal was claimed by Aiden Angilletta (Connah’s Quay High School/North East Wales) with bronze in the Under-16 Boys category.
The Deeside AAC athlete set the pace in the first event by racing to the fastest time of the competition in the 60m hurdles – 8.44.
The long jump saw him register 6.10m for the long jump and 24.49 in the 200m. A distance of 11.48m saw him claim a new PB in the shot put.
Angilletta ran 2:17.38 for the 800m, which saw him finish in third on 3,196. Gold went to Murray Taylor (Scotland) with 3,385, ahead of silver medallist Caleb Green (England) with 3,272.
WELSH INTER-SCHOOLS AND INTER-REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS – NEWTOWN, NOVEMBER 16
More than 1,000 runners from all over Wales headed to Dolerw Park in Newtown to compete in the 25th Inter Regional Cross Country Championships.
A total of 20 races featured competitors across all age ranges from Primary School Year 3 and 4 up to Masters 55 categories.

RUN THROUGH ALTON TOWERS 10K – NOVEMBER 16
Two-time World Athletics Championships marathoner Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) won over 10K at Alton Towers for the second year running.
The Commonwealth Games athlete crossed the line to take victory in 31:23 – surpassing last year’s winning time of 32:09.
Second went to Ben Claridge (Abingdon) in 32:47, while Connor Rogers (Wrexham AC) was third in 32:51.
CONWY HALF MARATHON – NOVEMBER 17
Voted amongst the top five most scenic half marathons in the UK by readers of Runners World, the Conwy Half Marathon starts and finishes on the bridge outside the iconic Conwy Castle.
The course heads towards Deganwy, Llandudno, and the town’s famous pier. Then around the Great Orme taking in views of the Isle of Anglesey, Puffin Island and the surrounding north Wales coastline, then back to Conwy and the finish line.
The first of almost 3,000 runners back to the bridge was Sam Stratford (HI RUNNERS), who crossed the line in 1:13.47. Harry Lupton (Charnwood AC) was second in 1:14.11 and James Browne (Bethesda) third in 1:15.06.
The first female to finish was Keely Smith (West Cheshire Athletics Club), breaking the tape in 1:24.37. Holly Chipman (Silverdale Running Club) was second in 1:25.50 and Sarah Attwood (Highland Hillrunners) third in 1:26.03.
MULTI-TERRAIN 10 – PEMBREY, NOVEMBER 17
The annual Multi-Terrain 10 was held at the picturesque Pembrey Country Park near Llanelli on Sunday morning.
The 10-mile course is run over an off-road trail through the park and also stretches along Cefn Sidan Beach, featuring a combination of soil and firm sand.
The first athlete home at this year’s event was Ieuan Griffiths (Peak Performance), who completed the course in 1:00.34.
Mark Harrison (Peak Performance Wales) finished second in 1:01.06, with Sam Milligan (Peak Performance Wales) third in 1:02.23.
The first woman home was Katie Williams (3M Gorseinon Road Runners) in 1:13.29, followed home by clubmate Jessica Wesley in 1:16.14. Bethan Williams was third in 1:17.09.
