Cardiff Cross Challenge
On what turned out to be a beautiful early autumn day, the first World Tour Gold Label Cross Country event took part within the Cardiff Cross challenge, the first leg of the cross challenge series and the first race of the Gwent League.
In the men’s race, Edward Zakayo of Kenya put his kick good use to win over the 9,400m course, whilst Pamela Kosgei, sister of Bridget Kosgei, won the women’s 6,400m race after she moved away from the rest of the field with around 1km to go.
In the men’s race, it was Ciaran Lewis (Les Croupiers) who was the first Welsh man home in 14th. Dewi Griffiths (Swansea) was next back in 17th, whilst Tom Wood (Eryri Harriers) closed out the top three with a 23rd place finish.
In the women’s race, Jenny Nesbitt (Pontypridd) was the first Welsh athlete across the line, finishing in 5th place. Lauren Cooper (Parc Bryn Bach) was next, finishing in 16th and first scorer in the Gwent League. Alaw Beynon Thomas (Les Croupiers) rounded out the first three with a 20th finish, just two weeks after running a big personal best at the London Marathon.
