CARDIFF METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY CHRISTMAS CLASSICS – DECEMBER 15

The ever-popular Cardiff Metropolitan University Christmas Classic took place at the National Indoor Athletics Centre on Sunday.

The event also featured the Welsh Senior, U20 & U17 3000m Championships, and the South West England and Welsh Masters 3000m Championships.

The three heats in the women’s 3000m championship saw outstanding young Great Britain International Innes FitzGerald record the fastest time of the day.

The newly crowned European Under-20 Cross Country Champion crossed the line in 9:04.87 – the third fastest time by a British under-20 athlete of all time.

Winner of the Welsh women’s senior 3,000m title was Rebecca Harries (Cardiff Athletics) who also claimed the under-17 title as she clocked 9.55.71.

Senior silver medallist was Elin Griffiths (Newport Harriers) in 9:57.72. Bryony Boyce (Cardiff Athletics), claimed senior bronze and Under-17 silver in 10:00.34. The women’s under-20 title went to Ceri Griffiths (Newport Harriers) in 10:33.24.

In the men’s 3,000m James Heneghan (Pontypridd Rodents) posted the fastest time in the heats overall as he claimed the Welsh senior title in a season’s best 8:08.45.

Craig Williams (Newport Harriers) claimed silver in 8:29.03, while Henry Evans (Newport Harriers) was third in 8:37.31, which also brought him the Under-20 gold.

The Under-17 champion was Tom Garrod (Newport Harriers) who finished in 8:58.49.

Evan Grime (Salford Harriers and AC) ran a new UK under-17 record of 8:23.76 as he finished eighth overall.

There were record breaking performances in both the men’s and women’s 600m events, which included Welsh age group records.

In the women’s heats, Eleanor McIntosh (Bristol and West AC) claimed an all-comers record of 1:31.60 to post the fastest time of the day.

National development programme athlete Darcy Coslett (Llanelli AAC) added to her collection of Welsh records with a new under-17 age group best of 1:33.39.

Fellow NDP athletes Anna-Rose Marchant (Cardiff Athletics) clocked 1:34.34, while Lois Codling (Newport Harriers) clocked a PB of 1:34.96 and Olivia Morgan (Swansea Harriers) celebrated a PB of 1:36.62.

The men’s race was won by under-20 NDP athlete Jack Organ (Brecon AC) in a new PB of 1.20.63, while Harry Bradley (Newport Harriers) was third in 1:22.89.

Meanwhile another NDP athlete Lucas Salvage (Newport Harriers) claimed a new Welsh Under-17 age group record as he finished fourth in 1:23.03.

In the women’s 60m heats, NDP sprinter Aliyah Afolabi (Cardiff Archers) ran the fastest time of the day in a new PB of 7.54.

While in the men’s 60m event, Aron Tugwell (Cardiff Archers) matched his PB of 6.88 as he posted the fastest time of the day.

Nyree Perry (Bristol and West) was in incredible form in the women's pole vault and set a new Welsh indoor record and PB of 3.83.

Among the other stand-out performances saw Commonwealth Games multi-eventer Lauren Evans’ win in the women’s 60m hurdles, clocking 8.56. Evans also finished second in the high jump with a best of 1.63m. Emily Tyrrell (Exeter Harriers) took the honours with 1.63m.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Youth Games sprinter and transition programme athlete Joseph Berry (Newport Harriers) won the men’s 300m in 37.02.

Paris Paralympics competitor Funmi Oduwaiye (DSW Para Athletics) won the women’s shot put with 11.29m.

NDP athlete Luca Phillips won the men’s long jump with a consistent series of distances ranging from 6.66m to 6.87m. Toks Akanbi-Mortimer (Cardiff Met) finished narrowly behind him with a best of 6.86m.

Other notable performances by NDP athletes saw Cobie Phillips (Cardiff Archers) claim a PB of 12.38m in the triple jump, while Finnley Roynon (Cwmbran Harriers) recorded a PB of 7.04 in the men’s 60m. GB international Owen Garrett (Yate) celebrated a PB of 12.04m in the shot put.

TELFORD 10K – DECEMBER 16

A number of Welsh athletes took part in a high quality Telford 10k which was won by Jack Rowe of Aldershot Farnham and District on Sunday.

The highest placed Welsh athlete in the men’s race was Commonwealth Games marathoner Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers), who finished 24th in 29:32. Dylan Nazareth (Les Croupiers) was 28th in 29:33 and Adam Barber (Harborough AC) was 48th in 29:51.

The highest placed female Welsh athlete was Gemma Tutton (Swansea Harriers) who was 41st in 35:45, while NDP athlete Abi Doherty (Deeside AC) was 50th in 36:07.

Doherty also led North Wales women to third place in the representative team match, while Matt Clowes led the North Wales men’s team to third place with 30:01.

24HORES D'ULTRAFONS EN PISTA DE BARCELONA – DECEMBER

The Barcelona 24 Hour, is a track event in Spain taking place in the outer lanes of the track measured at 437,70m and also features 12 and 6 hour events and relays.

Among those taking part was ultra runner Jen Coleman (Les Croupiers) who ran for 12 hours and will be returning home with an outstanding array of records including:

World V50: 40 mile and 12 hour track
GBR V50: 6 hours, 50 miles, 12 hours
Wales Overall (AT): 6 hours, 50 miles, 12 hours

Her splits were:

40 miles: 5:24.22
6 hours: 71.32Km
50 miles: 6:53.13
100km: 8:46.36
12 hours: 132.128km

MERTHYR MAWR PUDDING RACE – DECEMBER 15

The annual Merthyr Mawr Pudding Race, which covers a  range of terrains including ‘the big dipper’- Europe’s second highest sand dune, took place on Sunday.

The men’s race was won by Rhys Hardman in 42:06, followed home by Lee Dando in 42:27 and Oliver Williams in 42:52.

The women’s race was won by Helen Oliver in 50:54, ahead of Erin Andrew in 51:40 and Lucy Entwistle in 52:41.
