TOM JONES INVITATIONAL – GAINSVILLE, FLORIDA, April 12

Olympian Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers) opened his outdoor 400m season with a run of 46.74 in Florida on Friday.

The fifth place finish in a quality field came the day after the Matt Elias-coached athlete was named in the Great Britain squad for next month's World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas.

GARY WIENEKE MEMORIAL – CHAMPAIGNE, ILLINOIS, APRIL 13

Amber Simpson (Wrexham/Illinois University) produced a brilliant performance to smash her own Welsh hammer record in Illinois on Saturday.

The Commonwealth Games athlete, who is coached by JC Lambert, was competing in her first hammer competition of the season.

Simpson posted a best distance on the day of 70.21m which obliterated her previous national record of 68.13.

LEAMINGTON SPRING THROWS FESTIVAL – APRIL 13

Sabrina Fortune (Deeside AAC) celebrated her call up to the Great Britain team for next month’s World Para Athletics Championships by throwing a distance which equalled the world F20 shot put record.

The reigning world champion, coached by Ryan Spencer-Jones, posted a non-ratified 14.39m on Saturday in an ideal warm-up for the world championships which begin in Kobe, Japan on May 17.

Also at the Leamington meeting, Lucy Harris (Swansea Harriers) registered a new discus PB of 43.44.

ATHLETIC ELITE MEETING – MILAN, APRIL 13

Wales’ fastest man, Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff Athletics), made his outdoor debut this year over the unfamiliar 150m distance in Milan on Saturday.

The Italy-based athlete won the race in 15.33, ahead of fellow Brit Adam Gemili, who finished third in 15.73.

The race confirmed a return to fitness for Azu, who had been due to compete at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow earlier this year but had to withdraw due to injury.

BRISTOL TRACK CLUB 5K ELITE – APRIL 13

Welsh athletes enjoyed a successful day at the Bristol Track Club 5K Elite meeting on Saturday.

Cari Hughes (Cardiff Athletics) continued the early season form which saw her set a new 3,000m PB last weekend.

The Great Britain cross country international won the women’s 5K race in Bristol, clocking 15:38. Second was Alaw Evans (Les Croupiers), who crossed the line in 16:09.

In the men’s elite race, James Heneghan (Pontypridd Roadents) finished second behind Kadar Omar. The Welshman clocked 14:14.

The girls under-15 3km race saw Sioned John (Cardiff Athletics) finish second in 10:29, while Imogen Davies finished third in 10:48. In the under-13 boys 3km event, Jude Jenkins (Neath) was third in 10:22.

WELSH JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE - NORTH 1 – BANGOR, APRIL 13

The North Wales Track and Field Development series aims to provide competition for under-11 to under-15 athletes.

This year’s event at the Menai Athletics Track attracted entries from the Menai, Colwyn Bay, Deeside, Eryri, Wrexham and Maldwyn athletic clubs.

The combined team event was won by Menai Track and Field with a total of 158 points ahead of Colwyn Bay on 81.

WELSH JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE - WEST 1 - SWANSEA, APRIL 13

The Welsh Junior Development League – West 1 fixture at Swansea Bay Sports Park attracted an entry of more than 220 athletes between the ages of 11 and 15.

The combined team event was won by Swansea Harriers with 1293 points ahead of Bridgend AC with 847 points.

KYMIN DASH 2024 – MONMOUTH, APRIL 14

The Kymin Dash is a challenging and very scenic seven mile race, straight up to the top of the Kymin above Monmouth, and back down on a long scenic loop of the Wye Valley.

This year’s race, which is organised by the Spirit of Monmouth Running Club, was won by Jon Like (Parc Bryn Bach Running Club), who completed the course in 39:56. He was followed home by team mate Huw Evans in 42:45 and Ricci Watts (Pont-y-pwl and District Runners) in 42:59.

The first female runner was Sandra Chipper (Lliswerry Runners), who crossed the line in 47:38. Katie Adams (Spirit of Monmouth) was second in 49:50 and Niki Morgan (Chepstow Runners) was third in 50:02.

WELSH JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE - SOUTH/EAST 1 - CARDIFF, APRIL 14

Almost 300 athletes entered the Welsh Junior Development League South/East 1 fixture at Cardiff International Sports Campus.

The combined event was won by Cardiff Athletics with 2358.5 points ahead of Cardiff Archers with 2222 points.
