Weekend Round Up: 5k Titles for Evans, Thomas & Jones

Welsh Championships - Cardiff 5k Race for Victory, Whitchurch - May 5
Ieuan Thomas [James Thie] claimed his fourth Welsh 5K title on the streets of Whitchurch on Sunday night. The Cardiff 5K 2019 Race for Victory was won by Southend's Adam Hickey, in a time of 14:14, but it was the Cardiff AC man Thomas who won gold in the Welsh Championships incorporated into the race.
The World Championships and Commonwealth Games steeplechaser reclaimed the title he won for the third time in 2016 by crossing the line in a time of 14:18. Thomas finished ahead of Swansea Harriers Jon Hopkins [Chris Jones], in a time of 14:20, and Guy Smith, who clocked 14:29.
The women's title was claimed by Cardiff AC's Clara Evans [Chris Jones], who continued her excellent form this year by winning in a time of 16:04. Former champion Jade Williams, of Amman Valley Harriers, took silver in 16:22, and Swansea Harrier Eli Kirk claimed bronze in 16:32.
Run and Become Sri Chinmoy 5k, incorporating the Scottish 5km Championships at Silverknowes, Edinburgh - May 3
Welsh international Kris Jones, who lives and works in Dundee, was returning to action for the first time since representing Great Britain at the Simplyhealth Great Stirling XCountry in January, won the Run and Become Sri Chinmoy 5k. The Swansea Harrier, who has been suffering from an Achilles injury, repeated his win in 2017 by finishing first in a time of 14:26 - nine seconds outside the course record set by Great Britain marathon star Callum Hawkins.
Jones, who has just returned from a three week Welsh Athletics altitude training trip to Albuquerque in New Mexico said:
"I have not raced since Stirling and the International XC in early January – so it is great to be back,’ he said. "I thought 14.30 might just about win it tonight and I managed to edge ahead about 4K. I wasn’t really aware that James Donald was in the pack just behind and it is another great run from him."
ABP Newport Marathon - May 5
Mickey Morris Racing Team's Carla Swithenbank ran a personal best of 2:45.48 to win the women's title at the ABP Newport Marathon on Sunday. Swansea Harrier Alaw Beynon-Thomas, making her marathon debut finished second in 2:58.06 with Clevedon AC's Francesca Rawlings third in 3:05.07. Chichester’s Chris Bird took the men’s race in 2:31:34, while Ottley’s Scott Harrington was second in 2:33:34. South West Road Runners’ Gwylym Gibson knocked nearly ten minutes off his best with 2:36:28 in third.
ABP Newport 10K, May 5
Cardiff's Matt Clowes won the ABP Newport 10K in a course record time of 29:43 in his first race back after injury. Bideford's Shaun Antell was second in 29:46, while Swansea Harrier Dan Rothwell put in an excellent performance to finish third in 30:38. The women's race was won by Bristol and West AC's Charlotte Taylor Green in 34:44, ahead of Shaftesbury Barnet's Rachel Felton, who clocked 35:02 and Cardiff Lucy Marland, who crossed the line in 36:34.
BUCS Outdoor Championships, Bedford - May 4-6
Welsh athletes shone at the BUCS Outdoor Championships in Bedford over the weekend. Among those to claim golds was Loughborough University and Deeside AC sprinter Shannon Malone [Glyn Hawkes], who clocked a personal best of 11.62 to win the 100m title. The Welsh Indoor 60m Champion said afterwards:
“I’m absolutely over the moon and to set a personal best this early on in the season gives me a lot of confidence to try and run the time for European Under-23s or to go for a spot in the relay team.”
Another Welsh winner was Cardiff Met and Cardiff AC hammer thrower Jac Palmer [Adrian Palmer] who claimed his fifth BUCS title with a throw of 60.95.
“I think I have every single colour of medal,” said Palmer. “I’m happy to complete the set and to add this gold to the under-23 British title."
Patrick Swan [Mo Pearson] won the shot put in a closely-fought battle, the Truro College student eventually taking the title with a throw of 16:10. Harrison Walsh [Josh Clark] (F44) of Cardiff Metropolitan won the ambulatory shot put with 15.23m. Meanwhile, on the final day of competition, Cardiff Met's women won the 4x100m relay and teammate Adele Nicoll [Ryan Spencer Jones] won the shot put with an effort of 15.42, having registered 15:70 in the prelims. It was a great weekend for Welsh Throwers:

Llangollen 10K Trail - May 5
Shaun Hughes, of Denbigh Harriers, won the Llangollen 10K Trail in a time of 36:49, just four seconds ahead of Scott Nixon of Deestriders RC. Third place went to Ross Welsh, of Meirionydd Running Club, who clocked 37:50.
The women's race was won by Widnes Running Club's Louise Casey, who crossed the line in 43:50, ahead of Helen Davies, Wrexham Tri in 44:03 and Melissa Turnbull, of Maldwyn Harriers, in 45:57.
Carmarthen Mayors Races - May 6
The ever-popular Carmarthen Mayor's races held on Bank Holiday Monday saw almost 800 runners of all ages turn out and a clean sweep for the local athletics club in the main 5K race. Carmarthen Harrier Dafydd Jones finished first in a time of 16:59.30, ahead of his club mates Jack Tremlett in 17:01.80 and Frank Morgan just behind in 17:02.16. The women's race was won by yet another Carmarthen Harrier - Eva Edwards, who crossed the line in 19:13.70. Second was Amman Valley Harrier Sioned Howells in 20:13.12 and Bridgend AC's Georgie Dando in 20:46.30.
