Wales comes together to Own The Night

28/10/2026 00:00, I Mewn Blog /

Around 2,000 runners came together across Wales on Sunday 25 October for Own The Night, with more than 60 running clubs hosting events across 47 locations, alongside three official Welsh Athletics runs in Cardiff, Swansea and Colwyn Bay.

The campaign brought communities together to raise awareness of women’s safety and highlight the role everyone can play in creating safer running environments.

From local club runs to the three official events, runners united around one important message: women and girls should be able to run safely and confidently, whenever and wherever they choose.

Three events, one shared message

The three official Own The Night events took place in Cardiff, Swansea and Colwyn Bay, bringing runners together to show their support for the campaign.

In Cardiff, around 250 people joined the event at Riverside Social, creating a fantastic atmosphere and demonstrating the strength of the running community when it comes together for a shared cause.

In Swansea, runners gathered at BeerRiff Brewing Co, while in Colwyn Bay, Black Cloak Brewery & Taproom hosted the local event alongside the running community. Both events brought people together to show their support for women’s safety and help spread the Own The Night message.

Across all three locations, the events provided an opportunity for runners to connect, raise awareness and show that creating safer spaces for women and girls is a shared responsibility.

The power of allyship

A key focus of this year’s Own The Night campaign was encouraging more people, particularly men, to become active allies and help drive change.

It was fantastic to see more men coming together alongside women to show their support and recognise the role they can play in making running safer. Being an ally means more than simply standing alongside women. It means challenging sexist comments, speaking up when something is not right and taking action to help create positive change.

Through the campaign, runners were encouraged to think about what it means to Be The Light, both during their runs and in their everyday lives.

Small actions can make a big difference, and everyone has a role to play in creating a running community where women and girls feel welcome, supported and safe.

A Wales-wide effort

The impact of Own The Night extended far beyond the three official events, with running clubs organising their own activities across 47 locations throughout Wales.

From local club runs to community events, the response highlighted the strength of Wales’ running community and its willingness to come together to support an important cause.

Welsh Athletics would like to thank every club, run leader, volunteer, partner and runner who took part, organised an event or helped spread the message. The commitment shown by communities across Wales played a vital role in bringing the campaign to life.

The conversation doesn't stop here

Own The Night is about more than one evening of running. It is about continuing to challenge unacceptable behaviour, encouraging active allyship and working together towards a future where women and girls can run without fear.

Everyone can help make a difference, whether that means speaking up, challenging harmful attitudes or supporting initiatives that make running more inclusive and welcoming.
