Virgin Money London Marathon preview

"Pob hwyl i bawb o Gymru o bob lefel, sef elît neu rhedwyr hwyl sy'n cystadlu dydd Sul yma yn Marathon Llundain //Best wishes to all Welsh athletes of all levels, be they elite or fun runners, that are taking part in this Sunday's London Marathon."
Steve Perks, Chair Welsh Athletics.
There will be a strong Welsh presence again in London this weekend with hundreds of elite and club athletes making the trip East to battle it out for Welsh Championship honours and personal glory as they take on the iconic 26.2-mile route. Weather conditions look set to be cool and dry, unlike last years Gold Coast Commonwealth Marathon where many of the British runners suffered in the extreme heat.
Steve Jone’s 2:07:13 in Chicago in 1985 is still the Welsh Record, but a back in form Dewi Griffiths [Swansea Harriers] may have this within his sights soon, if not this weekend. Dewi is the only current Welsh athlete to make the Male top ten – Josh Griffiths is 11th & Andy Davies 13th - but it’s a different story with the women’s Top 10 where there are four current runners, all with times from within the last two years. Natasha Cockram of MMRT is 4th on the list with her 2:34:18 from January of this year in Houston, is likely to move up the rankings further after this weekend or certainly in the near future.

Parc Bryn Bach runner, Lee Aherne, will be running to raise funds to build a statue of Welsh Marathon legend Steve Jones in Ebbw Vale (aim £20k) – you can donate here. Lee himself will be looking to place as high as possible in the Over 50 category.
