Three Welsh Athletes Nominated for Olympic World Class Programme

17/10/2024 00:00, I Mewn Blog /

Three Welsh athletes have been nominated for membership to join the UK Athletics Olympic World Class Programme (WCP) for 2024/25.

Melissa Courtney-Bryant (Rob Denmark, Poole AC), Jeremiah Azu (Marco Airale, Cardiff Athletics) and Joe Brier (Nick Dakin, Swansea Harriers) will all remain on the Olympic WCP.

The Olympic WCP is UK Sport’s National Lottery funded initiative to identify, develop and support talented athletes towards medal success at the Olympic Games and other global major Championships.

The WCP is split into several levels reflecting the actual and the future performance potential of athletes: Podium, Podium Potential, Relay and Confirmation. Athletes are nominated for the WCP if it is judged they have the realistic potential and demonstrable performance capability and capacity to win medals at Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games or towards 2032.

As per previous years, the nomination for WCP membership is subject to UK Sport ratification and a signed athlete agreement between the athlete and UKA.

Chris Type, Head of Performance at Welsh Athletics said:

Congratulations to the three Welsh Athletes retained on the UKA World Class Programme. With planning for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles well underway the confidence shown by UKA in our Welsh Athletes is very encouraging. Building on the Welsh medal winning success in Paris is a key focus for the Welsh Athletics performance team.
