Harrison Walsh and Melissa Courtney-Bryant Named Team Wales Athletics Captains for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Welsh Athletics is delighted to announce that Harrison Walsh and Melissa Courtney-Bryant have been appointed as Team Wales Athletics captains for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The pair will lead an exciting squad of Welsh athletes as they prepare to represent Team Wales on one of the biggest stages in international sport, bringing a wealth of experience, leadership and passion to the role.

Harrison Walsh has become one of Wales' most inspiring athletes, overcoming the disappointment of a career-ending rugby injury to establish himself among the world's leading para throwers. After being told he may never play rugby again following a serious knee injury while with Swansea RFC, Walsh turned to athletics and has never looked back. A Commonwealth Games bronze medallist from Birmingham 2022, he has since added World and European bronze medals to his growing collection and represented Great Britain at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Now preparing for his second Commonwealth Games, Walsh brings resilience, leadership and a deep pride in representing Wales as Team Wales Athletics captain in Glasgow.

Melissa Courtney-Bryant brings a wealth of experience to the Team Wales Athletics captaincy as she prepares for her third Commonwealth Games appearance. The accomplished middle and long-distance runner knows what it takes to perform on the biggest stage, having claimed 1500m bronze at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. A three-time European Indoor 3000m medallist, including silver earlier this year, Courtney-Bryant has demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout her career, returning to the top level after a foot injury ruled her out of the Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2021 European Indoor Championships. She will lead by example in Glasgow as one of Wales' most experienced international athletes.

Welsh Athletics, Head of Performance, Chris Type when asked about the selection he said:

Harrison and Melissa were clear stand out choices for Men's and Women's captains having achieved medal success, but also demnostrate the personal values that guide our team. Over the last few weeks they have really supported the athletes and taken the lead on ensuring each team member has a great experience in Glasgow

Melissa Courtney-Bryant on being selected as team captain for Glasgow 2026:

It's such an honour to be named captain along with Harrison. The opportunity to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games only happens once every 4 years so to be the captain too makes this moment even more special
