This weekend, many of Great Britain and Ireland's most talented young athletes will compete at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast as the Schools' International Athletic Board (SIAB) U17 Track and Field International takes place on Saturday 18 July 2026.

64 pupils have been selected in the strong Welsh Team squad which they’ll face national teams representing England, Scotland and Ireland in one of the highlights of the schools athletics calendar.

Last year’s event was staged in the East Midlands at Derby, 12 months after Welsh Schools hosted the annual end-of-season International in 2024 in Carmarthen.

The Welsh team will be led by captains Tiana Odugbesan (Blackwood School) of South East Wales, and Macsen Martins-Hughes (Ysgol Glantaf) of Cardiff & the Vale. Selection was very tough this year, not only due to the high calibre of athletes to select from, but also due to the significant challenges with SIAB not complying to the new UKA age group rule changes.

Several members of the squad have previously represented Welsh Schools in track and field, cross country and indoor athletics, while for many others this will be their first opportunity to compete for Wales at international level.

At the 2025 SIAB Track and Field International in Derby, Welsh Schools won 11 medals, comprising of eight individual medals and three relay podium finishes. With the squad featuring many of the UK's highest-ranked young athletes, the Association will be aiming to challenge for a similar medal haul in Belfast in less than 48 hours time.

The Welsh Schools' Athletic Association is extremely grateful to the parents, coaches and PE teachers whose support have helped these athletes earn selection.
