Support Your Club success stories

15/04/2020 00:00, I Mewn Blog / Club Notice Board /

The Welsh Athletics #SupportYourClub campaign has certainly gained momentum and it has been amazing to see what clubs across Wales have been doing during these times of isolation and social distancing. Today's focus is on three Welsh Athletics affiliated clubs that have been leading the way, innovating and finding new ways to support their members and the wider public during this time.

1. Ogmore Phoenix Runners

The 2019 Welsh Athletics Development Club of the Year have launched a number of initiatives including the Virtual Sunflower Relay

From the feedback received and activity via social media, we know that this activity has inspired many clubs to start virtual relays and other virtual events with their members. In addition, the club is also conducting interactive training activities (e.g. ‘Tabata Tuesdays’) for club members via Zoom the video/web conferencing platform.

2. Port Talbot Harriers

Have launched the April Club Challenge - spanning Physical Exercise, Mindfulness and Habits challenging members to set their own goals and challenge themselves all with the added bonus of all the money raised will go towards helping to buy items from the Swansea Bay NHS wish list for patients unable to have visitors due to COVID-19.

3. Cybi Striders:

Have recently completed a club Virtual 5k Easter Dash with some impressive results. Having a bigger impact than just on the membership, the club also set up a JustGiving page with all proceeds going to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Covid-19 support fund which, to date, has raised £650.00. We think this is an amazingly positive initiative with the added bonus of keeping communications, interaction and challenge within the club very much alive.

At Welsh Athletics, we certainly have been overwhelmed by the support that clubs have been providing for their members and the ways that clubs have found to set challenges and innovate. We know how vital clubs are in providing a sense of community as well as social support and helping towards the emotional wellbeing of their members. During these times especially, it is important that clubs continue to evolve and adapt their offering to their members and it is also important that members support their clubs by engaging and supporting them as best they can.

Further information and regular updates will be posted here where we will share further positive club news and stories.
