The wind settled for a sunny evening at the Welsh Athletics International in Cardiff yesterday which brought out an array of incredible performances from all athletes.
After his entry into the 70m club a few weeks ago at the ESAA, Tom Hewson broke his own Championship Record Performance last night with a huge throw of 67.85m. That was not the end of Tom’s achievements last night however, as he found out that he has be named as part of the GB team going to Bydgosz, Poland for the European Team Championships next month. On his selection he said, “I can’t wait, it will be a great learning opportunity for me. It is my first senior vest competing on an international stage for Great Britain and it will be a great opportunity to throw against some of the best throwers in the world.”
Tom was not the only Welshman who broke his own record last night, Osian Jones showed he was in great form by extending his Welsh record to 71.77m last night. He said, “I am really happy. Training has been going well the past week and it all came together today.”
On the track, T20 athlete Steven Morris ran an incredible race, running a new UK best in the mile with the quick time of 4:20.99.
“It was great to see so many of our Junior athletes rise to the occasion and perform so well. Hopefully, one or two would have been inspired by Osian’s fantastic Welsh Record to start the evening’s athletics.
We were delighted to welcome so many different nations to compete this year, and that fact that we had 12 meeting records on the night demonstrates the quality of performances. It is important to give our Junior athletes an opportunity to compete on the International stage, and we hope the event will continue to grow in the years to come.” - James Williams, Head of Operations.
There were other stand out performances, notably Owain Lloyd Hughes who ran an impressive and controlled 200m, being just short of the meeting record in a time of 21.40. Both the men and women’s 4x100m relays ended in a dramatic finish for Wales. Both teams went off strong but fell behind before taking back the lead in the final few metres. The men’s quartet of Thomas Payne, Eli Onyewu, Zachary Price and Owain Lloyd Hughes finished in a time of 41.46 and the female quartet, made up of Emmanuella Kone, Moli Jones, Gabrielle Fakade and Issie Tustin, finished in a time of 47.97.
Overall winners were England South Athletics, who retained their titles by putting on a great performance across the board. Well done to all the athletes who competing across all the events.
