Obituary: Mary Gaynor Hourihan

The family of athletics in Wales were saddened to hear that Gaynor Hourihan has passed away. Gaynor along with her late husband David made a major contribution to the development of athletics in the principality.
She first became involved in athletics in 1972 when her daughter Alison joined Cardiff Amateur Athletics Club. As a parent volunteer Gaynor qualified as a timekeeper; throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's she served as a timekeeper at both Track and Field and Cross Country meetings ranging from grassroots to championship and international events.
Gaynor held office as Regional Officials Secretary and Officials Secretary for the Welsh Women’s AAA. She was also proactive in the development of the Welsh Masters Association and was actively involved with Caerphilly Primary Schools athletics. Her contribution to her club and to the Welsh Women’s AAA was second to none. She supported her club at home and whilst traveling with club teams around the country. In addition to her duties as Welsh Women’s AAA Officials Secretary, she undertook a range of administrative tasks including looking after visiting international teams.
"Gaynor will be remembered for her professionalism, dedication, support, and commitment to our sport and I am proud to have worked with her. On behalf of athletics in Wales our sincere condolences to the whole family."
