Jenny Nesbitt and Osian Perrin claimed automatic selection for the Spar European Cross Country Championships in Dublin.

Jenny Nesbitt was clearly delighted with her convincing second place finish in the senior women’s race.

When race winner Jess Judd made her decisive move with half a lap to run, Wales’ Nesbitt also made her play, going clear of Abbie Donnelly and Kate Avery amongst others.

The Cardiff athlete, continued to move clear right until the finish line, securing her team place with an impressive runner-up spot on a bitterly cold day in Sefton Park.

Cari Hughes was the fifth athlete to finish in the U23 women’s race and will now wait to hear if she is selected, early next week.

Earlier in the day, Osian Perrin had led his Welsh team home in the U20 men’s race, coming through a strong field of the nations best athletes, to finish fourth, securing a team place. ‘I was hoping to finish in the top three’ said Perrin, ‘but the main thing today was to secure a team place and now I can look forward to racing in Dublin’.

The Cardiff men’s team were third in the European Clubs Cross Country Championships Trial, led home by Jake Smith in seventh and finishing behind Central AC and Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers.
