Swansea Harriers stalwart John Griffiths has received the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his services to Athletics in the Kings Birthday Honours. A founding member of Swansea Harriers, John has dedicated over 60 years to the sport as a Coach and club volunteer.
Speaking of the award, Welsh Athletics Vice President and long time Swansea Harrier committee member Ian Griffiths noted:
" This award is thoroughly deserved as John has given over 60 years of service to our sport not in Swansea but across Wales.
"John is a highly respected middle distance coach, who over the years has guided and encouraged countless youngsters, many of whom have gone to achieve top international honours.
"He is also a man of many talents, as he is also a qualified track and field official.
"On behalf of Swansea Harriers and also all those involved in our sport, in Wales I would like to extend to John and his family many congratulations on being awarded this honour"
It was only fitting that at the same time as John’s announcement, one of his former athletes Non Stanford was awarded and MBE for services to Triathlon. Non, a former Welsh Junior Champion and record holder, started her career under John’s tutelage at Swansea Harriers.
Other recipients included former Chief Executive of Commonwealth Games Wales, Chris Jenkins who was awarded an OBE, and long time Athletics supporter Lynne Morgan received a BEM for services to sport and charity.
Welsh Athletics would like to congratulate all recipients on their awards.
