At the recent Welsh Athletics Awards Evening hosted at the Vale Resort, 12 former athletes were inducted into the Welsh Athletics Hall of Fame.

The first Welsh Athletics Hall of Fame took place at the 2007 Awards Dinner at Cardiff’s Angel Hotel. This was to celebrate the centenary of the first Welsh Athletics Championships, which was held at Newport in 1907.

The criteria for this very special award is for Welsh athletes who have achieved the highest standards in the sport of athletics, and by example have brought credit and distinction to Welsh Athletics.

Often a medallist in Olympic, World, European or Commonwealth Games, setting a world record in a standard Olympic event, or another notable achievement.

The 12 new inductees join 37 former inductees, totalling 49 athletes now inducted into the Welsh Athletics Hall of Fame.

  • Commonwealth Games 880y silver medallist 1930
  • British mile record holder 1931
  • Winner of 8 Welsh titles at half mile and mile 1929-1936
  • Part of British team to set a world 4 x 1500m record 1931

Jim Alford *
  • Commonwealth Games one mile champion 1938
  • World Student Games 800/1500m champion 1937
  • Winner of 11 Welsh titles between 1934 and 1948

Jack Ainsworth-Davis *
  • Olympic 4 x 400m gold medallist 1920
  • 5th Olympic 400m 1920

David Jacobs *
  • First Welsh winner of an Olympic medal when a member of Britain’s Olympic 4 x 100m gold medal team in 1912
  • Prolific winner at the Welsh championships, taking 12 titles in all between 1910 and 1914, and uniquely taking the 100/220/440 yds treble in 1911 and 1913

Clive Longe *
  • Commonwealth decathlon silver medallist 1966
  • Britain’s top decathlete during the mid-1960s
