The waiting is finally over for the Welsh track and field team as the Commonwealth Games athletics action gets underway at Glasgow’s Scotstoun Stadium today.
After three days of intense and exciting action for their Team Wales colleagues, now is the turn of Jeremiah Azu, Olivia Breen and Co to step into the limelight.
And Wales’ fastest man Azu will literally start the athletics schedule with a bang for the Welsh team.
The Cardiff Athletics flyer, who finished fifth in Birmingham four years ago, takes to the track for the first round of the men’s 100m. The first of the heats are due to start at 10:10am with Azu drawn to run in Heat 3.
Among those also entered for the 100m alongside the 2025 World Indoor 60m champion will be the likes of England’s Louie Hinchcliffe, Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who has a personal best of 9.77.
Next up for Wales at 11:40 in the women’s hammer qualifying will be Welsh record holder Amber Simpson, who like Azu is returning to the games after finishing a highly creditable fifth overall in Birmingham
The Wrexham AC athlete, who is now based in the United States after a successful spell representing Illinois University, has spoken of her pride at representing Wales four years ago and the honour of doing so once again in Glasgow.
Simpson’s main rivals are likely to be Canada’s Camryn Rogers, who has a personal best of 81.13m, while New Zealand’s Lauren Bruce is likely to challenge for a podium place.
Rounding off the Welsh action in the morning session will be Team Wales’ captain Olivia Breen, who won gold over 100m last time around.
The City of Portsmouth star, who celebrated her birthday on Sunday, goes in the women’s T38 100m heats which get underway at 12:55.
Among those lining up alongside Breen in heat two will be Maddie Down, of England and Australia’s Rhiannon Clarke.
Breen will be hoping to return to the stadium for Monday’s evening session which includes the T38 100m final at 19.50.
The evening also features the Welsh athletics squad’s youngest competitor Ellie Bowen (Cardiff Archers).
The 17-year-old lines up in the women’s F57 seated shot put final which is due to get underway at 19.05.
Lining up against the Caerphilly-born thrower will be the likes of Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi and Sharmila, of India.
On the track, the women’s 800m first round, due to start at 19:15, will see Issy Boffey (Enfield and Haringey AC) running in heat two.
The Great Britain international, who finished fourth for England at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, has made great strides since switching her allegiance to Wales, where her mum was born and raised.
Also in Boffey’s heat will be the likes of home crowd favourite Mena Scratchard and Jamaica’s Kelly-Ann Beckford.
