Get to know Funmi Oduwaiye ahead of the Paralympic Games

31/08/2024 00:00, I Mewn Blog /

Meet Funmi, one of five Welsh throwers at this year's Paralympics. While Funmi's journey so far leads her to compete in the Women's Discus Throw F64 (September 1 from 09:47am) and the Women's Shot Put F64 (September 5 from 10:15am), her path taken to get there and to para-athletics as a whole is a unique one.

Just over two years ago, Funmi was one of the rising stars of Welsh and British Basketball, having played from age 11 as part of the Cardiff Met Archers. Looking destined for big things in the sport, she was one of the standout players when competing for Wales internationally at European level in Moldova in 2019 and had received offers from professional clubs across Europe.

However, in 2022 Funmi underwent what should have been a routine operation to treat a common condition. After complications during surgery resulting from a damaged artery, she was left with paralysis from the right knee and below. Having been introduced to Para-Athletics by the late Anthony Hughes at Disability Sport Wales. She made her debut at the World Para Athletics Championships in 2023 and returns to Paris with hopes of a successful set of Paralympic events!

Check out our Q&A with Funmi below:

My favourite part about being in the prep camp is seeing the Paralympics GB team from different sports and interacting with them for the first time.

I don't actually have any pre-competition rituals.

What is the one meal you look forward to after competing?

I definitely look forward to a Burger King after competing!

Who is the first person you message after you have competed?

Definitely my family group chat!

Do you have a message to inspire the next generation of athletes?

I would definitely advise the younger generation to try everything, take every opportunity and don't ever think that you cannot do something just because society says you can't!

Please join us in a wishing Funmi a big good luck at her first Paralympic Games!
