St David’s Day was one to remember for all of us at Welsh Athletics, as we proudly delivered three successful coaching courses across Wales . Each course and all its attendees are a testament to the passion and growth of athletics across our communities, building real momentum and encouragement as we look ahead to the European Championships and Commonwealth Games this summer.
Our Coaching Assistant’s Course at the Swansea Bay Campus welcomed an incredible 20 attendees eager to begin their coaching journey. Our licensed Coaching Assistants course helps clubs build strong foundations as the course covers the basic fundamentals of movement with an introduction to the key principles in track-based athletics which include running jumping, throwing, wheelchair racing and race walking. The course was expertly supported by our tutors Hannah and Jonny, whose knowledge, enthusiasm, and encouragement created a fantastic learning environment. The energy on the day reflected the commitment of everyone involved and a brilliant way to mark St David’s Day.
Meanwhile, in North Wales, we welcomed candidates to another successful LiRF course hosted at the Deeside track. A special thank you to Kerry, who stepped in at the last minute from England Athletics, donned her daffodil and headed to Wales to tutor the course. Her professionalism and dedication ensured the course ran seamlessly, creating a fun and engaging learning environment for all involved. Our volunteers proudly represented their clubs, including North Wales Road Runners, Eryri Harriers, Deeside AAC, Llangollen RC and Wrecsam Tri, to name just a few. They truly embodied

proving that it’s the small actions and commitment of volunteers that make a huge impact on our sport.
Over in Caerphilly at St Martins Comprehensive, we were lucky to enjoy some welcome sunshine as participants joined our LiRF (Leadership in Running Fitness) course. The session was led by Ben, who guided the group through both practical and theoretical elements of our Leader in Running Fitness course. The smaller group size allowed for detailed discussions, hands-on learning, and excellent engagement throughout the day. Over the last 12 months, we have seen massive 20% increase on the previous year of LiRF volunteers taking their first steps into coaching and attending the Leader in Running Fitness courses. We hope that the sun will be shining again this weekend as Ben returns to St Cyres in Cardiff, delivering another LiRF course so with just only two places remaining be sure to book your place by clicking this link here Leadership in Running Fitness (WALiRF25.20) - St Cyres Penarth
These volunteers are the heartbeat of our sport. By giving their time, energy and enthusiasm, they are not only strengthening clubs and run groups but nurturing and uplifting our athletics family across Wales. Through their dedication, they are inspiring and shaping the next generation of athletes, ensuring that people right across Wales have the opportunity, support and belief to realise their potential, a legacy that stretches far beyond St David’s Day and into the future of Welsh athletics.
