Day 1: 2024 Welsh Senior & U15 Indoor Championships Round-Up

The 2024 Welsh Senior & U15 Indoor Championships got off to a flying start, with Commonwealth Games champion Olivia Breen (City of Portsmouth) setting a new 60m personal best of 8.31 Competing in her first 60m race in six years.
Jac Sheehan (DSW Para Academy) claimed the first title of the day in the seated shot with a throw of 7.44m and 350 Raza Points. He was followed by Kieran Jones (DSW Para Academy) in second with 7.30m and 327 Raza Points.
In the U15 girls 60m Aliyah Afolabi (Cardiff Archers) set a new Championship Best Performance, with a time of 7.62 seconds.
In the field events Aidan Angilletta (Deeside AAC) jumped a personal best of 12.18m to go top of the 2024 British U15 triple jump rankings. The North Wales athlete enjoyed further success in the U15 boys long jump and 60m hurdles. Whilst in the U15 girls triple jump, Mae Grant (West Chesire Athletics Club) set a new Championship Best Performance with a jump of 9.57m.
A second Championship Best Performance came from Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers), winning her semi-final race in 54.16 to set the new record, a week after breaking the 300m track and all-comers record at the Cardiff Metropolitan University Non Thomas Open.
Competing in the open championships, the 2023 British Indoors 60m Hurdles Champion, David King (City of Plymouth) took victory in the men’s hurdles with a time of 7.74. Whilst in the women’s final there were plenty of personal bests set, which saw all three podium athletes secure new best times. Lauren Evans (Cardiff Athletics) took the Welsh title in 8.45, followed by Grace Morgan (Cardiff Archers) in 8.51. Commonwealth Youth Games athlete Sophie Lisk (Cardiff Archers) completed the podium positions in third with 8.70.
Meanwhile, off track, Thomas Walley (Wrexham AC) cleared a height of 5.00m to secure the men’s Welsh title. Continuing with the field event, Sabrina Fortune (Deeside AAC) added another Welsh title to her collection in the senior women’s shot put, throwing a World Lead distance of 13.88m.
After getting coemption underway in the morning, Emily Lowery (Belgrave Harriers) took victory in the afternoon 1500m final, finishing in 4:32.68. And Matthew Brunnock (Western Tempo) claimed the men’s title with 3:53.91.
Closing out the first day of competition was the highly contested 60m sprints. Which saw Cardiff Athletics athletes take both the senior women's and men’s titles. It was Hannah Longden (Cardiff Athletics) that took the women’s title with a time of 7.53, to secure her third Welsh sprint title in the last year. While Dewi Hammond (Cardiff Athletics), claimed the men’s title with 6.76.
In the senior men’s ambulant/para 60m, John Bridge (Cardiff Athletics) secured first place in 7.81 seconds and 605 Raza Points. Followed by Commonwealth Games Athletes William Bishop (Deeside AC) in second with 8.95 seconds and 524 Raza Points, and Tomi Roberts-Jones (Newport Harriers) in third with 8.91 seconds and 259 Raza Points.
