Daily Mile School receives Food for Fuel Award

24/06/2024 00:00, I Mewn Blog /

The award forms part of the wider set of the Jamie Oliver's Good School Food Awards, who teams up with The Body Coach Joe Wicks! The award honours Jen Craven from Ysgol Trefonnen in Llandrindod Wells. Jen's work brings together the importance of food and physical activity in creating a healthy school environment. Encouraging children to be active and eat well at school is so important, because it fuels them to feel good and boosts their physical and mental health.

Jen is passionate about the importance of physical activity during the school day alongside her work to make sure that fresh, nutritious food is as accessible as possible.

The award's official website states:

Jen’s infectious energy knows no bounds, and it’s helping her make a real difference in her local community. She’s a creative force for good, making fresh, nutritious food accessible for everyone – all while making exercise fun!

Jen's work within the school and passion for physical activity has seen the introduction of fun daily challenges such as the walking bus. Every class also achieves their all-important Daily Mile, no matter the weather! In the summer holidays, Jen runs a 12-day long Food and Fun Club, giving around 60 children access to a free breakfast and lunch while helping to engage them in physical activity. She also runs an "Eat Them to Defeat Them" challenge, encouraging children in every class to try new types of fruit and vegetables.

Welsh Athletics, Run Wales and The Daily Mile are excited to see the recognition of Jen's work within the school as well as the wider importance of physical activity during the school day while linking to a holistic approach with good nutrition. Congratulations go to Jen for her work at Ysgol Trefonnen and for the important recognition it has now received!

Joe Wicks, presenting the award at the school, said:

I just love the work Jen has been doing, not just with the children and the school but the community and the parents. She’s really helping to elevate the health and fitness of this school. It’s a really great example of what can be achieved when someone’s passionate and loves what they do. I’m really proud of her and hopefully lots of other schools are inspired by her work.
