Commonwealth Youth Games 2023: Introducing our Jumps Athletes

This year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in the twin nation island of Trinidad and Tobago will get underway in a week’s time. Welsh Athletics are proud to introduce the jumps athletes who will be making their way to the Caribbean to represent Team Wales.
Jessica Lee
From: Whitland
Event: Long jump, 4x100m mixed relay
Coach: Wayne Griffiths / Steve Perks
Club: Carmarthen & District Harriers
Jessica Lee first got into athletics at the age of 9 competing in Cross Country for her school, before she later developed into a track and field athlete. Lee competes across multiple events, finishing third at the 2023 England U20 Combined Events Championships and taking the Welsh U20 title.
Last season Lee broke the 6m barrier in the long jump for the first time at the SIAB Track & Field International in Belfast and took the U17 British long jump title in the same season, her first major championship win.
“This was an opportunity that I was working very hard towards this season and will be one of the biggest competitions I will compete at to date.
“When I received the phone call, I could not believe that I was actually going to Trinidad! My close family couldn’t be prouder, as they know how much hard work, I put in.”
William Bishop
From: Denbigh
Event: T38 long jump
Coach: Morgan Jones
Club: DSW Para Academy
William Bishop got into athletics after attending an InSport day in Caernarfon, where he met his coach, Morgan Jones. Bishop is now ranked third in the world in the T35 long jump.
Bishop was one of 3 athletes that travelled to Cape Town for the Commonwealth Youth Programme, which offered athletes from Africa, Asia, and Europe a development opportunity in preparation for the Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago. At the end of the camp, a competition was held and Bishop took gold in the T38 long jump.
“I feel so proud to be selected to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Youth Games, I was shocked when I found out I was selected.
“I can’t wait to challenge myself against other athletes from across the Commonwealth.”
