Championships Best Performances set by Sam Gordon and Sarah Abrams at the First Welsh Championships of the decade

The first Welsh Championships of the decade was held las Saturday at NIAC in Cardiff with new championships best performances set and over 30 new Welsh Champions crowned.
Fastest man in Wales, Sam Gordon sailed through the heats to dominate the final, clocking a new championship best performance in 6.69 with Jeremiah Azu and Dewi Hammond close behind who both clocked 6.81.
Sarah Abrams beat her own previous championship best performance and was just short of the Welsh record in the women’s long jump with a jump of 6.42m.
Shannon Malone retained her title in the 60m, running 7.52, beating Mica Moore and Hannah Williams who also looked strong through the rounds.
In the 200m, Melissa Roberts looked comfortable going through the rounds to put her safely through to the final. She was just off her championships best performance set last year but Melissa retained her Welsh title and earned her gold medal 24.54.
Commonwealth athlete, Jonny Hopkins dominated the field in the men’s 1500m. Jonny, who is chasing GB selection this year, led the race from the start and quickly created a gap between him and the chasing pack winning the welsh title in 3:52.17. Remi Adebiyi took silver in 3:54.46 and youngster Benjamin Reynolds was closed behind to take the bronze in 3:55.12.
The women’s 1500m was harder to call with the women being more bunched together. It was Kate Seary that made the break for the line and was rewarded with the win with Lauren Cooper and Julia Cooke following.
In a very close 60m hurdle final Caryl Granville just stole the Welsh win from Olivia Walker in 8.50. In the men’s race commonwealth decathlete Curtis Matthews took the win in 8.46.
Both Welshman David Locke and James Heneghan controlled their heats to get them both safely through to the final. Both men made their move in the final lap and gave everything on the final straight with James just edging out David to take the overall win in 1:54.00.
In the women’s race, it was Rachel Scott that took the Welsh title with Jade Williams just taking second place from Lizzie Harris who finished 3rd.
In the field, Curtis Matthews once again showed that he is in good form winning the Long Jump individual title with a jump of 7.07m to add to his Shot bronze and 60m hurdles gold.
In the men’s High Jump, non-welsh competitor Tom Gale took the overall win and set a new championship best performance of 2.28m whilst Welsh youngster Seb Clatworthy just beat Jonathon Bailey to the Welsh senior title after countbacks with both men jumping 2.02m.
In the women’s high jump competition, Molly Hole took the win in 1.70m with Welsh heptathletes Lauren Evans and Lauryn Davey taking silver and bronze respectively.
Pat Swan and Adele Nicoll both dominated their Shot competitions leading from the first round throw through to the last round throw. Pat threw a mighty 16.20m and Adele who is looking in very consistent form threw 15.96.
In the triple jump, Tom Atkinson took the Welsh Senior title with a big jump of 13.38.
There was a close competition in the men’s pole vault with Thomas Walley just beating Ieuan Hosgood to the Welsh Champion title, jumping 4.56m. In the women’s competition, Carys Jones and Isabel Thomas both jumped 3.81m with Carys just taking the title over Isabel after countbacks.
