Our volunteers play fundamental roles in the smooth running and organisation of all our athletics events. From local leagues to major events, such as the Commonwealth Games, volunteers such as Lorraine Mulvaney ensure our athletes have the best possible competition environment.
At this years Games, Lorraine volunteered as a Technical Team Member, and we caught up with her about her experience.
I had an absolutely amazing time as a volunteer with the Longines technical team. Self imposed duties included smiling with excitement every time we came across past and present elite athletes, networking with high level coaches from around the world.
It was particularly special to be fitting so many amazing athletes from around the commonwealth with their transponders in the final call room area, and wishing them the best of luck just before their races. Athletes included: Olivia Breen, Toby Amusan, Adam Gemelli, Elaine Thompson-Heran, the Jamaican 4x400 mens team, the English men and women’s 4x100 as well as Hannah Brier and Charlotte Wingfield, and so many more.
Volunteers received a variety of games specific thank you gifts at different stages (day 1, day 3 etc). All of which were well received especially as we weren’t aware of this incentive until we started. The most memorable gift was the engraved Birmingham commonwealth games relay baton with a thank you script inside.
