U15 Boys Octathlon

8 events for the U15s and for Salem Kiambi (Lorraine Mulvaney, Cardiff) it was the first time trying some of the events in competition conditions. Nevertheless, the Cardiff athlete had solid performances in each of those events going into the final event, the 1000m in overall second place. Unfortunately, due to a knee injury picked up in the Pole Vault Salem was forced to stop within sight of the finish line but still managed an amazing 6th place overall with an amazing 5 pb’s in the process and as a result, he became Welsh U15 Octathlon Champion.

U17 Men Decathlon

It was the first time attempting the daunting 10 events for the U17 men, the 3 Welsh athletes started the events strongly on day one but unfortunately, John Bennett (Brecon, Derek Osbourne) had to withdraw before starting day 2 due to injury. The 2 remaining athletes performed strongly in a large field, picking up multiple personal bests along the way. Toks Akanbi-Mortimer (Rhymney Valley) finishing the strongest with 2 pbs in the last 2 events to take the Welsh Decathlon title ahead of a brave Aharon Graham-Mulvaney (Cardiff AAC), who had his 1st combined event competition all season managed 3 pb's, which was an incredible effort due to requiring a 2 months break mid season to recover from injury (fracture in his foot). The Welsh athletes finished a creditable 12th  and 13th overall and are now able to call themselves ‘Decathletes’ and take home the Welsh championship Gold and Silver.
