2023 Welsh U13/U17/U20 Championships, 12 & 13 August
It was a great weekend in Newport for the 2023 Welsh U13/U17/U20 Championships, which saw over 450 athletes compete across two days.
The weekend got off to a great start with Thomas Williams (Wrexham AAC) breaking the Welsh U17 hammer throw record in the first field event of the Championships. The Wrexham athlete threw 65.57m to also break Jac Palmers Championship Best Performance from 2012.
At the Championships a classification clinic was facilitated in collaboration between Welsh Athletics, Disability Sport Wales and UK Athletics. The purpose of classification in Para Athletics is to define who is eligible to compete and ensure fair competition by minimising the impact of eligible impairments on the outcome of competition. To do this, athletes are assessed and then placed into competition categories, called Sport Classes, according to how their impairment affects sports performance.
Podium 5K, 12 August
The Home Nations Addias Podium 5K returned to Bute Park on Saturday, which saw 100’s of athletes take on the scenic flat and fast course around the park.
Osian Perrin (Menai Track & Field) was the first athlete to cross the finish line, finishing fourth in a time of 13:57 to become the first Welsh athlete to run under 14 minutes on Welsh soil.
Whilst Beth Kidger (Brighton Phoenix) was the first Welsh female athlete across the finish line with 16:16, followed by Jenny Nesbitt (Pontypridd Roadents) with 16:18.
Six athletes represented Wales in the team event, with the men’s Welsh team finishing fifth with a time of 43:10, whilst the women’s Welsh team finished fourth with 51:33.
Newham & Essex Beagles Track Open Meetings Summer Series, 13 August
Several Welsh athletes travelled to London for the Newham & Essex Beagles Track Open Meetings on Sunday.
Sam Gordon (Cardiff Athletics) ran a season best over 100m with a time of 10.53 seconds.
Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers) completed her season with a fourth-place finish in the 400m, finishing in 54.10 seconds.
World Dwarf Games, 28 of July – 5 of August
Josh Grist (DSW Para Academy) travelled to Cologne for the 2023 World Dwarf Games. It was a hugely successful games for the athlete picking up gold in the discus and shot put and silver in the javelin. Grist also picked up team medals in football, table tennis and basketball.
