"Starting Blocs is a fun, exciting program to introduce children to the sport of athletics.”
What is Starting Blocs?
Children will learn the key movement skills needed for a life in sport, in a safe and positive environment, through games that are designed to teach children the foundations of running, jumping and throwing. Powered by Welsh Athletics, Starting Blocs will provide the tools and training for clubs, schools and private providers to deliver inclusive, progressive and fun activities with a child-centred focus. These activities will improve a child’s confidence and resilience whilst also developing their physical skills.
Why has Starting Blocs been developed?
Starting Blocs provides an offer for children in Wales to participate in athletics and movement activities from an early age, enabling them to develop the skills needed to enjoy life in not just athletics, but any sport. Developing the fundamental skills of running, jumping and throwing, are essential to a child’s physical development, an area our sport has a lot of knowledge in! Starting Blocs’ philosophy is to ensure more children across Wales have access to fun, safe and child-centred sessions that teach key fundamental skills which are transferable across all Athletics disciplines and a variety of different sports.
How can I get involved?
During the COVID 19 outbreak, we will be releasing free weekly activities for children and families to try at home, through our Starting Blocs Facebook page. If you’re interested in becoming an official Starting Blocs provider within Wales you can register your interest via the website startingblocs.co.uk
“We’re very excited to announce the soft launch of Starting Blocs. As our clubs continue to thrive and grow we have had more questions around what activity can be done with this age group, and we feel that what we have developed in Starting Blocs will offer a full program of fun activity for young children to get involved in!”
