2023 Welsh Road Relay Championships Round-Up

On a sunny day in Pembrey last Saturday, Wales’s top athletics teams went head-to-head in battle to be crowned Welsh Champions.
The day got underway with the Primary races. In the boy’s race Bridgend Athletics finished with 18 points, Aberdare Valley finished second with 24 points and Carmarthen & District Harriers completed the top three with 25 points. It was Jack Woodhouse of Neath Harriers that set the fastest time, finishing the course in under 5 minutes with 4:59.
In the girl’s race, Carmarthen and District Harriers finished first in the team standings with 19 points, followed by Aberdare Valley with 25 points and Swansea Harriers took bronze with 35 points. Rhondda AAC’s Isabelle Kelland recorded the fastest time with 5:48 minutes.
Next up was the U13 races. Bridgend Athletics took victory in the boy’s race, completing the relay in 24:48, Cardiff Archers came home in second in 25:27 with Lucas Howard-Machado taking the fastest time with 5:36 minutes, and Cardiff Athletics finished third in 25:48.
In the women’s U13 race, Cardiff Athletics picked up their first victory of the day finishing with 27:14 minutes. It was Taf Runing & Orienteering Team that picked up silver with 27:53 as well as the fastest leg with Manon Fflur Phillips running 6:24 minutes. And Bridgend Athletics completes the podium places in bronze with 28:42 minutes.
There was success for Newport Harriers in the U15 boy’s race. The A team secured victory with a time of 32:54 minutes, whilst the B team secured bronze with 35:52 minutes. It was Aberdare Valley that took silver in a time of 34:30 minutes, they also secured the fastest leg, with Garyn Tough running 10:38 minutes.
Whilst in the girl’s race Cardiff Athletics picked up two further medals. It was Cardiff Athletics A that took victory with 34:42 and Bryony Boyce running the fastest leg with 11:22 minutes. Swansea Harriers was next team home with 36:20 minutes and Cardiff Athletics B finished third with 36:42 minutes.
It was a clean sweep for Cardiff Athletics in the U17 boy’s race. The A team finished with 31:56 minutes, the B team finish with 33:19 and the C team completed the top three with 33:37. It was Joshua Sanders from the A team that set the fastest leg with 10:15 minutes.
There was more success for Cardiff Athletics who took victory in the U17 women’s race with a time of 36:39 and Millie Gold claimed the fastest leg with 10:55 seconds. They were joined by Swansea Harriers A team in second with 37:53 minutes and Newport Harriers took bronze with 38:43 minutes.
In the final race of the day, Swansea Harriers retained their titles in both the men’s and women’s senior races.
In the men’s race Swansea Harriers A finished in a time of 1:08:46, with Dewi Griffiths registering the fastest leg of the race, in 17:06 minutes.
It was Cardiff Athletics A team that took the senior men’s silver medal at this year’s edition, completing the relay in 1:11:14. Whilst North Wales outfit Meirionnydd Running Club claimed the final medal, finishing in 1:11:25.
Whilst the women’s Swansea Harriers A team also backed up their win from 22, finishing in a time of 1:21:16, with first leg runner Caryl Edwards secured the fastest lap with 19:38 minutes.
Les Croupiers equalled their finish from last year’s event, picking up silver once more in a time of 1:25:49. And Pontypridd Roadents secured the podium positions in a time of 1:29:46.
