Welsh Senior Indoor Championships - Day 1 Report

It was frantic first day of action at the Welsh Senior Indoor Championships at NIAC on Saturday, with Welsh titles being won by the closest of margins in a number of events.
The first title of the day was won by Wrexham's Thomas Walley in the Men's Triple Jump with a distance of 14.44m. Patrick Swan (Cornwall; 15.75m)) and Adele Nicoll (Birchfield; 15:14m) were both crowned Welsh Champions in the Men's and Women's Shot Put events respectively, with Thames Valley's Amelia Strickler winning the overall Women's competition with a distance of 17.20m.
On the track, Yeovil athlete Georgia Silcox won the first Final of the day in the Women's 60m Hurdles, with Olivia Walker (Cannock & Stafford) crowned Welsh Champion with a lifetime best of 8.68 seconds. Colwyn Bay youngster Roman Hodgson secured an impressive solo victory in the u15 Boys 800m Final, clocking 2:07 for victory, whilst over in the Men's Pole Vault competition, it was Cardiff's Mark Mellor who was crowned Welsh Champion with a height of 4.15m.
The action continued to come thick and fast with the u13 and u15 Boys and Girls relays taking place on the track, before Andrew Wright(Willowfiled Temperance) won the Men's 800m in 1:54, with Carmarthen's Kyran Roberts clocking 1:55 to be crowned Welsh Champion. Next up was the Women's 800m which was fiercely contested Final; Bracknell athlete Rachel McClay holding on for an impressive victory with a time of 2:10.
Clare Maurer took victory in the Women's Pole Vault competition, recording a height of 3.75m, whilst in the Women's Long Jump Final it was Sarah Abrams (Blackheath & Bromley) who took victory. The Men's 400m Final proved to be a battle to the line as Steffan Dylan Jones (Swansea Harriers) edged out Dave Awde with a time of 50.75, and the Women's 200m Final produced a blistering performance from Birchfield athlete Melissa Roberts, clocking 24.37 for victory with a Championship Best performance, in what was her third race of the day.
In the Combined Events International, Welsh athlete Ben Gregory, representing Great Britain, got off to a flying start as he clocked a new lifetime best of 7.32 seconds in the Men's 60m. He then jumped 6.84m in the Long Jump before rounding off Day 1 of the Men's Heptathlon with an excellent High Jump series, with a best height of 1.90m, roared on by the Cardiff crowd.
