On Thursday 4 June, Welsh Athletics attended the Welsh Sport Association Industry Awards, an evening celebrating projects and initiatives across the sector that have had significant impact on the communities they serve across Wales.

WSA members and other key stakeholders from the sport and physical activity sector gathered at the Parkgate Hotel in the heart of Cardiff, to recognise just some of the brilliant work carried out within the WSA membership base over the past year.

Welsh Athletics’ Own The Night Campaign was shortlisted for the ‘Most Influential Campaign’ alongside two incredibly worthy campaigns delivered by Basketball Wales and Badminton Wales.

We were delighted to be announced as the winners, and for Own The Night to receive the recognition for such an important campaign. The award celebrates the incredible impact that Own The Night has had on raising awareness for, and the advocacy work completed in, women’s safer running. Our thanks go to Orchard, The Police Forces across Wales, and to everyone up and down the country who supported the campaign.

Planning is underway for Own The Night 2026, which will launch in the early Autumn. This year there will be a greater focus on allyship and there will be specific bystander training opportunities, along with the uniting Own The Night Run on Sunday 25 October.

Hannah Baulch, Welsh Athletics Head of Participation and lead on the Own The Night Campaign said:

We are thrilled to receive the award for this important work and to gain the recognition nationally for its impact across Wales.  I’d like to dedicate it to anyone who has ever experienced unwanted behaviour whilst out running (or otherwise). Welsh Athletics is determined to continue advocating for and raising awareness for safer running for women, there is still so much to be done.  We look forward to continuing the campaign in 2026 and to support those who run, jog, or jeff to feel confident and safe to continue being active throughout the winter months.
