Welsh Athletics made a vibrant impact at this year’s Royal Welsh Show, showcasing its commitment to getting communities across Wales moving through a full programme of activities, conversations and celebrations; including the launch of Phase Two of Athletix, the national fun‑first athletics initiative for children aged 4–12.

Across the day, children and their families visiting the show were welcomed to a playful introduction to run, jump and throw designed to help children build confidence, coordination and a love of movement. Families took part in a range of mini‑challenges and games, supported by staff and young leaders, demonstrating how simple, inclusive activities can spark lifelong enjoyment of being active.

A highlight of the programme was a panel discussion on getting children more active, hosted in partnership with Sport Powys and featuring Sioned, an Athletix Activator from who shared first‑hand experiences of inspiring youngsters within rural communities. The conversation explored the barriers facing families, the importance of accessible opportunities close to home, and the role of clubs, schools and local authorities in creating welcoming environments for children to try sport for the first time. The session reinforced the shared ambition across sectors to support healthier, happier futures for young people in Wales.

Welsh Athletics also teamed up with Principality Building Society to deliver the Big Rural Relay, bringing together show visitors of all ages to complete a collective challenge celebrating teamwork, community spirit and the joy of movement with some unique equipment such as hay bales and wheelbarrows! The relay created a lively atmosphere around the marquee and highlighted how simple, low‑cost activities can energise children.

The day concluded with the official launch of Phase Two of Athletix, expanding the programme’s reach and resources for clubs, schools, local authorities and community groups. The new phase includes enhanced equipment packages, updated activity cards, access to the Athletix membership portal, and opportunities for children to take part in brand‑new recreational athletics events across Wales. Every child who joins an Athletix programme receives a free T‑shirt, helping them feel part of a growing movement that celebrates fun, friendship and physical activity.

Speaking at the launch, Welsh Athletics emphasised its commitment to ensuring that every child, wherever they live, has the chance to enjoy movement in a safe, supportive and playful environment. The Royal Welsh Show provided the perfect platform to celebrate this mission and to connect with families, partners and communities from across the country.
