Charlotte Arter and Jenny Nesbitt will head the Welsh challenge at the British Athletics Liverpool Cross Challenge on Saturday.
The event at Sefton Park will be hosting the trial for the Spar European Cross Country Championships in Fingal, Dublin on December 12th. The re-arranged fixture this December takes place on the custom built Cross Country course that had been due to hold the event in 2020 but was unable to due to the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic.
A strong crop of talented Welsh athletes will be competing in Liverpool, including Welsh Teams at U17 and U20 level and all will be hoping that the difficult weather conditions promised don’t disrupt their racing plans.
Arter will be amongst the race favourites for the women’s race both as a former winner here (2018) and following her emphatic victory at the season opener in Cardiff. Training partner Nesbitt was second in Cardiff and at Milton Keynes two weeks ago and is highly likely to be right at the front of the action in Liverpool.
Beth Kidger is a former Welsh Cross Country Champion that has shown great improvements in recent years and will be racing here.
Cari Hughes is another athlete in action in the women’s race and will be chasing a spot in the u23 women’s team. Hughes is a former winner in Liverpool and a regular at the European Cross Country Championships.
Osian Perrin was third in Milton Keynes and has great pedigree on the country so will compete here chasing victory and highly likely of securing a team spot. He is joined in the Welsh team by Dafydd Jones, Ben Miles and Lloyd Sheppard-Brown who will all have their eyes on Euro team selection.
Oliver Barbaresi will be chasing an U23 spot in the men’s race and Abed Teweldebrhan is perhaps the strongest of the Welsh athletes in the senior men’s category with some recent team regulars in the men’s race not in action this time including Dewi Griffiths, Kris Jones and Charlie Hulson.
The Liverpool event will also host a 1.5km trial race for the mixed relay at the European Championships where 1500m specialist James Heneghan will be chasing team selection.
