Weekend Roundup: Four new CBP in the Welsh Schools Championships and Josh Griffiths wins the first Healthspan Porthcawl 10K

European Cup 10,000m – July 6

Incorporated with Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000m PBs, the European Cup 10,000m took place with Welsh athletes travelling up to challenge for medals.

In the Women’s race, Charlotte Arter (Cardiff AC) ran a strong 32:40.63 finishing in 14th place

In the Men’s A race, Swansea Harriers Kris Jones (Swansea Harriers) finished in 30th place in a time of 29:10.27

European Athletics Combined Events Cup Super League, Lutsk, UKR– July 6-7

Ben Gregory (Birchfield Harriers) gave a strong performance over the weekend at the European Combined Events Cup, finishing 18th Overall with a score of 7233.

His performance also helped Team GB to a team bronze medal overall.

WSAA Track and Field Championships – July 6

Cardiff played host to athletes from all 8 school districts on Saturday. There an array of new PBs and  four new Championship Best Performances.

It was a day for the Pole Vaulters with William Trott (Swansea Harriers) jumping a new PB and CBP by over 50cm with a final jump of 4.10m to win the JB Pole Vault. Isabel Thomas (Cardiff AC) was just short of the Welsh Record but jumped a new PB and CBP with 3.55m to win the MG Pole Vault and following on from her CBP at the Welsh Junior Champs Ellie-Mae Wainwright (Newport Harriers) equalled the CBP on Saturday in the JG Pole Vault.

On the track, Ben Reynolds (Cardiff AC) relaxed through the line setting a new CBP in the MB 1500 in a time of 4:01.29 and Osian Perrin (Menai T&F) sped around the final lap of the MB 3000m to set a new CBP over the distance in 8:47.99

North Wales Regional Trail Running Championships, Llyn Alwen  – July 7

There was double success for the Prestatyn Running Club in the North Wales Trail Running Championships at picturesque Llyn Alwen on Sunday 7th July with club colleagues Steve Skates (Prestatyn) and Amie Bagnall (Prestatyn) taking the overall male and female titles respectively, whereas Amie was a comfortable winner finishing 13th overall in a time of 46.08, Steve was made to work hard by the fast finishing Alun Williams (Meirionnydd) to clinch the title by just five seconds in a time of 39.34.

 

British Athletics League Division One, Eton – July 6

Welsh club Swansea Harriers travelled to Eton and, with many athletes doubling up on events, finished 4th overall.

There were some standout performances from Daniel Rothwell winning the 3000m S/C A race in 09:23.57 and Leon Greenwood winning the 200m A race in 21.40.

Against some very fast clubs, Swansea took the win in the 4x100m in 42.08

British Athletics League Premiership, Sheffield – July 6

Cardiff AC travelled up to Sheffield without a full team and despite athletes trying their best, they finished in 8th place. 

Sam Gordon is looking in good form, taking the win in the 100m A race in 10.50 and Jac Palmer threw 67.45 in the Hammer Throw to take 2nd in the Group A.

The Healthspan Porthcawl 10K, Porthcawl – July 6

The Healthspan Porthcawl 10K made its debut this weekend with over 3,000 runners taking part including Welsh cross country champion James Hunt (Cardiff AC) who claimed a new lifetime best but was overtaken by Commonwealth Marathon runner Josh Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) in the final kilometre who took the win in 29:54.

Fellow Marathon (Micky Morris Racing Team) runner Natasha Cockram took the win in the women’s race, finishing in a time of 34:51.

UK Women’s League Premiership, Eton – July 6

Cardiff AC made the long journey to Eton with only half their team but with a strong team effort with some athletes tripling up, they managed to place 5th place overall maintaining their position well above the two relegation spots.

A standout performance came from U20W Ffion Palmer who threw her second furthest throw ever in Group A Hammer.
